Book Description
The book approaches the basic theory of structures from a different perspective from standard pedagogy. There is consideration of work and energy concepts as fundamental and the equations of statics derived from them. Likewise, these concepts, together with that of the characteristic response, are used in the derivation of beam theory. Plane sections remaining plane is then seen as a particular result for isotropic, homogeneous, prismatic beams. The general theory may still be used where none of these conditions holds, and can even be applied to trusses. It also corrects errors in the theory of beam shear. Special topics discussed include non-uniform torsion, the exact analysis of shear, anisotropy, advanced energy methods, optimum structures, and regular frames. Software provided in the book includes seven general purpose programs for analysis of plane, space frames with rigid or pinned joints, and uses the augmented Gaussian elimination process and dynamic storage techniques. - Approaches the basic theory of elastic beams and frames from a different perspective from standard pedagogy - Provides an introduction to more advanced ideas on the theory of structures and contains much additional material - Includes consideration of work and energy concepts as fundamental and the equations of statistics derived from them

Statics and Mechanics of Structures
Author: Steen Krenk
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400761139
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 511
Book Description
The statics and mechanics of structures form a core aspect of civil engineering. This book provides an introduction to the subject, starting from classic hand-calculation types of analysis and gradually advancing to a systematic form suitable for computer implementation. It starts with statically determinate structures in the form of trusses, beams and frames. Instability is discussed in the form of the column problem - both the ideal column and the imperfect column used in actual column design. The theory of statically indeterminate structures is then introduced, and the force and deformation methods are explained and illustrated. An important aspect of the book’s approach is the systematic development of the theory in a form suitable for computer implementation using finite elements. This development is supported by two small computer programs, MiniTruss and MiniFrame, which permit static analysis of trusses and frames, as well as linearized stability analysis. The book’s final section presents related strength of materials subjects in greater detail; these include stress and strain, failure criteria, and normal and shear stresses in general beam flexure and in beam torsion. The book is well-suited as a textbook for a two-semester introductory course on structures.

Vibration of solids and structures under moving loads
Author: L. Frýba
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401196850
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 507
Book Description
Transport engineering structures are subjected to loads that vary in both time and space. In general mechanics parlance such loads are called moving loads. It is the aim of the book to analyze the effects of this type of load on various elements, components, structures and media of engineering me chanics. In recent years all branches of transport have experienced great advances characterized by increasingly higher speeds and weights of vehicles. As a result, structures and media over or in which the vehicles move have been subjected to vibrations and dynamic stresses far larger than ever before. The author has studied vibrations of elastic and inelastic bodies and structures under the action of moving loads for many years. In the course of his career he has published a number of papers dealing with various aspects of the problem. On the strength of his studies he has arrived at the conclusion that the topic has so grown in scope and importance as to merit a comprehensive treatment. The book is the outcome of his attempt to do so in a single monograph.

Stability, Bifurcation and Postcritical Behaviour of Elastic Structures
Author: M. Pignataro
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483290832
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 375
Book Description
A comprehensive and systematic analysis of elastic structural stability is presented in this volume. Traditional engineering buckling concepts are discussed in the framework of the Liapunov theory of stability by giving an extensive review of the Koiter approach. The perturbation method for both nonlinear algebraic and differential equations is discussed and adopted as the main tool for postbuckling analysis. The formulation of the buckling problem for the most common engineering structures - rods and frames, plates, shells, and thin-walled beams, is performed and the critical load evaluated for problems of interest. In many cases the postbuckling analysis up to the second order is presented. The use of the Ritz-Galerkin and of the finite element methods is examined as a tool for approximate bifurcation analysis. The volume will provide an up-to-date introduction for non-specialists in elastic stability theory and methods, and is intended for graduate and post-graduate students and researchers interested in nonlinear structural analysis problems. Basic prerequisites are kept to a minimum, a familiarity with elementary algebra and calculus is all that is required of readers to make use of this book.
