Music and Coexistence
Author: Osseily Hanna
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1442237546
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
Music and Coexistence:A Journey across the World in Search of Musicians Making a Difference is both study and travelogue, as author Osseily Hanna explores the courageous work of musicians who compose and perform with their ostensible enemies or in extraordinary social situations. He documents the political and economic constraints faced by musicians, from the wall that encloses a refugee camp in Jerusalem, to the tensions among KFOR and Carabinieri peacekeepers who keep Serbs and Kosovar Albanians apart, to the cultural and linguistic suppression that afflicts minority communities in Turkey. A multilingual musician, Hanna examines the lives of the individuals and groups at the forefront of the effort to bridge ethnic, cultural, and religious divisions. Featuring musicians from thirteen different countries and territories across five continents, Hanna’s story includes a remarkable cadre of performers, such as the musicians who comprise Heartbeat, a group of Israeli and Palestinian youth, who compose, record, and perform music together; the Albino musicians of Tanzania, who regularly combat persecution by local shamans; the multiracial and thriving samba musicians in Sao Paolo; and a former child soldier from Cambodia who seeks to revive traditional music following the genocide in the 1970s. With photos taken by the author during his travels, this work is a unique contribution for those interested in world music and peace studies. This unique and remarkable work will open the eyes and the hearts of every musician and music lover who recognizes music as a universal language.

Climate and Literature
Author: Janet Pérez
Publisher: Texas Tech University Press
ISBN: 9780896723542
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
With the rise of a succession of sophisticated approaches that largely disregard literature's traditional role as a mirror of life, climate and other environmental factors have been generally disregarded in the interpretation of literary texts during recent decades. For that reason, it is only fitting that the climatological dimension be re-explored after a forty-year hiatus."Climate and Literature embraces a significant revision of the original telluric "notions" about the determinist relationship between climate and the attitudes and behavior of literary characters set in particular surroundings. In place of such vague notions, we find within these pages interesting and stimulating examples of true applied science and contemporary literary theory that more often than not treat literary depiction of climate not so much as a reflection of influence of particular geographic environments, but as a powerful symbol for psychological or textural processes undergone by the novels' characters, narrators or readers." Dr. Thomas Franz, Ohio State University."

Sites of Disquiet
Author: Ilka Kressner
Publisher: Purdue University Press
ISBN: 1612492886
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
Some of the most important writers of the twentieth century, including Borges, Cortázar, Rulfo, and García Márquez, have explored ambiguous sites of a disquieting nature. Their characters face merging perspectives, deferral, darkness, or emptiness. Such a space is neither a site of projection (as utopia or dystopia) nor a neutral setting (as the topos). For the characters, it is real and active, at once elusive and transforming. Despite the challenges of visualizing such slippery spaces, filmic experimentations in Spanish American cinema since the 1960s have sought to adapt these texts to the screen. Ilka Kressner's Sites of Disquiet examines these representations of alternative dimensions in Spanish American short narratives and their transformations to the cinematic screen. The study is informed by contemporary critical approaches to spatiality, especially the concepts of atopos (non-space), spaces of mobility, sites of différance, of a self-effacing presence, and sonic spaces. Kressner's comparative study of textual and cinematic constructions of non-spaces highlights the potential and limits of inter-arts adaptation. Film not only portrays the sites in ways that are intrinsic to the medium, but during the cinematic translation, it further develops the textual presentations of space. Text and film illuminate each other in their renderings of echoes, gaps, absences, and radical openness. The shared focus of the two media on precarious spaces highlights their awareness of the physical and situational conditions in the works. Therefore, it vindicates the import of space and dwelling, and the often underestimated impact of surroundings on the human body and mind. Despite their heterogeneity, the artistic elaborations of these ambivalent atopoi all share a liberating impulse: they assert creative and open-ended interactions with space where volatility ceases to be a negative term.
