Book Description
The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., commonly referred to as The Sketch Book, is a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by American author Washington Irving. Published serially throughout 1819 and 1820, and was published in one volume in 1894 by Altemus' Bookbindery. The collection includes two of Washington's best-known stories, attributed to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." It also marks Irving's first use of the pseudonym "Geoffrey Crayon," which he would continue to employ throughout his literary career.Apart from "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - the pieces which made both Irving and The Sketch Book famous - other tales include "Roscoe", "The Broken Heart", "The Art of Book-making", "A Royal Poet", "The Spectre Bridegroom", "Westminster Abbey", "Little Britain", and "John Bull", His stories were highly influenced by German folktales[1] , with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" being inspired by a folktale recorded by Karl Musäus.Stories range from the maudlin (such as "The Wife" and "The Widow and Her Son") to the picaresque ("Little Britain") and the comical ("The Mutability of Literature"), but the common thread running through The Sketch Book - and a key part of its attraction to readers - is the personality of Irving's pseudonymous narrator, Geoffrey Crayon. Erudite, charming, and never one to make himself more interesting than his tales, Crayon holds The Sketch Book together through the sheer power of his personality - and Irving would, for the rest of his life, seamlessly enmesh Crayon's persona with his own public reputation.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent, Vol. 2 He has commonly a broad, full face, curi ously mottled with red, as if the blood had been forced by hard feeding into every vessel Of the skin he is swelled into jolly dimensions by frequent potations of malt liquors, and his bulk is still further increased by a multiplicity Of coats, in which he is buried like a cauli ower, the upper one reaching to his heels. He wears a broad-brimmed, low-crowned hat a huge roll Of colored handkerchief about his neck, knowingly knotted and tucked in at the bosom; and has in summer-time a large bou quet of owers in his button-hole the present, most probably, of some enamored country lass. His waistcoat is commonly of some bright color, striped, and his small-clothes extend far below the knees, to meet a pair iockey-boots which reach about half way up his legs. Book Description
Excerpt from Select American Classics: Being Selections From Irving's Sketch Book, Webster's Orations and Emerson's Essays as Published in the Eclectic English Classics Washington irving, the eighth and youngest son Of William and Sarah Irving, was born in a house on William Street, in New York City, April 3, I783. His father was a descendant Of an Old Orkney family, and his mother was a native Of Falmouth, England. Young Washington began his school days at the age Of four. At the age Of sixteen his school days were over, and he began the study Of law. Though his education was Of a rudimentary and incomplete character, consisting Of a smatter ing Of Latin, music, and the ordinary English branches, he gave early signs Of a natural avidity for reading, and Of a power Of rap idly assimilating what he read. Sinbad, Robinson Crusoe, and Gulliver made a deep impression on his young mind. His early fondness for romance showed itself in many ways, and the theater in John Street possessed for him a seductive Charm, to which he succumbed as Often as he could steal away from home; for his father, Of the stern ways and habits Of the Scotch Cove nanter, looked upon theaters with hearty disfavor. In I8oz he entered the law office Of Josiah Ogden Hoffman, and, together with his Blackstone, he read general literature voraciously. About this time his health began to fail, and he made frequent tn'ps up the Hudson and the Mohawk, to Ogdensburg, Montreal. Book Description
Excerpt from English Sketches: From the "Sketch Book" The residence Of people of fortune and refinement in the country has diffused a degree Of taste and elegance in rural economy, that descends to the lowest class. The very laborer, with his thatched cottage and narrow slip Of ground, attends to their embellishment, The trim hedge, the grass-plot before the door, the little flower-bed bordered with snug box, the wood bine trained up against the wall, and hanging its blossoms about the lattice, the pot Of flowers in the window, the holly, provi dently planted about the house, to cheat winter Of its dreariness, and to throw in a semblance Of green summer to cheer the fire side: all these bespeak the influence Of taste, flowing down from high sources, and pervading the lowest levels Of the pub lic mind. If ever Love, as poets sing, delights to visit a cot tage, it must be the cottage Of an English peasant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
