Book Description
Edwin Rickards was the most flamboyant of Edwardian architects: his buildings were said by John Summerson to fizz like champagne. During a short working life, launched at the age of 25 by winning the competition to design Cardiff City Hall with his partners H.V. Lanchester and James Stewart, he completed four spectacular baroque buildings. Rickards’ work was unique in Edwardian architecture for his personal combination of French and especially Austrian sources. Working closely with H.C. Fehr and Henry Poole, leading practitioners of the New Sculpture, he designed two of the major monuments of the period. As well as being one of the best freehand draughtsmen in London, he was also a prodigious caricaturist. With a foot in the demi-monde and an endless appetite for architectural and personal adventure, Rickards was an unforgettable figure to everyone who met him. Illustrated throughout with stunning new photography by Robin Forster and by Rickards’ own sketches and drawings, this book portrays his close friendship with the novelist Arnold Bennett who described him, along with H.G Wells, as one of ‘the two most interesting, provocative, and stimulating men I have yet encountered’, and his meteoric career that ended with his early death.

Book Description
This report is the proceedings of the Fifth Annual World Bank Conference on Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development, entitled "Partnerships for Global Ecosystem Management: Science, Economics, and Law." An additional event, comprising Part One of this volume, was held to consider values, ethics, and ecosystem issues from a global perspective. The presenters considered the historic influence of values and ethics in the development of societies; reflected on the role of values and ethics globally; addressed the relationship of values and ethics to justice; and examined how the valuing of life locally, and the local consequences of global conditions, can deny justice. Part Two comprises the proceedings of the Forum on Human Settlements, Human Solidarity, and Global Ecosystems: A Conservation. The panelists spoke and then participated with the audience in a plenary conversation concerning the issues that link the requirements of human settlements, viable communities, and healthy and diverse ecosystems.

Book Description
Architects and Architecture of London is a visual, highly illustrated guide to London’s greatest historic buildings and the lives of the architects who designed them. Read about the architectural forefathers of London, such as Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Robert Adam and John Nash, Butterfield and Street, Blomfield and Lutyens. Learn about those who, in the twentieth century, have helped to form the London we now know, right up to familiar names such as Rogers and Foster. And then there are the others who, in amongst the great and remembered architects, stand as the forgotten majority: talented architects such as Arthur Davis, who designed the Ritz hotel. In the constantly changing patterns of London’s architecture, why do some buildings stand as testament to their architect(s), while others obscure their names from history? The book is organised by architect, to provide an easy point of reference for today’s designers and students and all those interested in the architectural history of London. Architects and Architecture of London illuminates the city’s two thousand year architectural history, through the lives and works of historic architects who remain salient and significant in London’s contemporary architectural geography. What the press said about Ken Allinson's London's Contemporary Architecture: An Explorer's Guide: 'Highly recommended . . . the book is crammed with maps and colour pictures with clear explanations about the design of the buildings.' Evening Standard 'The perfect accompaniment to a walk around the capital.' Homes and Gardens
