William Hill was born in a small town outside Pittsburgh called Whitaker. The part of Whitaker that he grew up in was a project or a low-income housing development. The area was closely knit but riddled with opportunities to commit crimes and engage in drug-related usage or distribution. William became involved in all the aforementioned activities. However, there were people who instilled in him the ingredients for success: Mrs. Glenn (third-grade teacher), his mother (who ended up graduating from the University of Pittsburgh), and a counselor named Mr. Randolph. William started an agency called NU Direction, and this book represents the transferable concepts taught in those youth and family court-ordered sessions over an eighteen-year period. He has witnessed thousands of young people who, like himself, were able to rise above false expectations and become law-abiding citizens.

Students' academic success in science is widely seen by political and business leaders as key to the nation's economic rebirth and future competitiveness. President Obama has made clear his belief in the importance of scientific literacy by stating that "our nation's long-term economic prosperity depends on providing a world-class education to all students, especially in mathematics and science." Here in California, strengthening education in science and related fields is seen similarly as critical to the state's future. An extensive report by the California Space Education and Workforce Institute labels education in science, technology engineering and mathematics the "essential ingredient for California competitiveness." But given the newly released results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) examining student understanding of science, one has to wonder if science education isn't the missing ingredient in the fight to improve the public schools. The NAEP assessment results show that less than half of U.S. students are proficient in science. Just over one-fifth of 12th grade students (21%) perform at or above proficient levels. This issue of "CenterView" illustrates the large gap between the rhetoric touting the importance of science education and the realities of what is happening in schools in California and across the nation. These dismal scores should serve as a wake-up call that the need to strengthen science education is urgent and the time to act is now. One place to start is to boost enrollment in teacher preparation programs featuring science and to take specific steps to strengthen science teaching practice for those already in the classroom.

How we understand education quality is inextricably linked with perspectives on social justice. Questions of inclusion, relevance and democracy in education are increasingly contested, most especially in the global South, and improving the quality of education, particularly for the most disadvantaged, has become a topic of fundamental concern for education policy makers, practitioners and the international development community. The reality experienced by many learners continues to be of inadequately prepared and poorly motivated teachers, struggling to deliver a rapidly changing curriculum without sufficient support, and often using outmoded teaching methods in over-crowded or dilapidated classrooms. Education Quality and Social Justice in the South includes contributions from leading scholars in the field of education and development. The text draws upon state of the art evidence from the five year EdQual research programme, which focuses upon raising achievement in low income countries, and demonstrates how systems of high quality universal education can be sustained. By exploring recent research initiatives to improve education quality, the importance of supporting local policy makers, educators and parents as agents of change, and students as active inquirers is highlighted, and the challenge of taking successful initiatives to scale is explained.
