Excerpt from Normal Training in the High Schools of Nebraska I have recognized sixty-four high schools as equipped and qualified to do normal training work for the school year 1907-8. It will be found that normal training classes in high schools will vary in number the same as the regular graduating classes do from year to year. In all probability it will be possible for some schools to qualify next year that Could not qualify this year, and likewise some schools that have qualified this year will not be able to qualify next year. Recognition will be given for but one year at a time. It was undoubtedly the intent of the legislature when it appropriated for the promotion of this work in the strongest high schools of Nebraska that none but those who actually desire to fit themselves to teach in the public schools of this state upon their graduation from high school should be permitted to take this work. Therefore the following obligation was required of all desiring admission to normal training classes in Nebraska high schools. Excerpt from The Nebraska Question Book The Nebraska Question Book is published with the belief that it will be of assistance to teachers preparing for examination to get an idea of what the examinations are like by studying previous questions. It is not supposed that the book will be sufficient in itself, or with the aid of textbooks on different subjects, to prepare a teacher to pass examinations creditably. It is recognized that the best way for a teacher to prepare for examinations, and for the work of teaching, is to pursue the required subjects faithfully. In school and college. Most candidates will review the subjects of the examination in standard texts, adding to these as many reference books as they can command. Answers are not given to the Nebraska Question Book; first, because of the magnitude of the undertaking and the consequent size and the price of the book that would be necessary. To contain them all; and, second, because it is thought that it is of more value to the student to work out the answers from his textbooks. If answers were given along with the questions, instructors would not care to have the book used for review purposes. In making out examination questions, Principals, Normal Training Teachers and others will find in this book a rich collection from which they may select their questions. Every question in this book has been made out by the state boards since November, 1905, which was the first year the state had charge of the examinations. They were written during wartime, and while directed to the internal condition rather than the external affairs of our nation, they are influenced and inspired by the omnipresent fact of the international catastrophe. The problem with which they deal is the problem of reconstruction where it is most fundamental, and that is in the education of the American citizen; for the economic and social difficulties which today we face can find no lasting solution except it be in a state of mind, a national state of mind, which shall unite our citizenship in a unified purpose; and this it is the business of education to define and achieve. The issue is sufficiently important to demand journalism, to justify propaganda. Most of the papers here reprinted were originally addressed to the people of Nebraska, but they deal with problems which are local and national in the same sense, so that their particular context ought not to prevent their general consideration.
