Book Description
In the UK we teach young people to become computer users and consumers rather than programmers and software engineers. This is creating a chronic skills gap in ICT. We need around 82,000 engineers and technicians just to deal with retirements up to 2016 and 830,000 SET professionals by 2020. On the plus side, the Government's proposal to include computer science as a fourth science option to count towards the EBac is welcomed. The Committee also welcomes the EBac's focus on attainment of mathematics and science GCSEs but is concerned that subjects such as Design and Technology (D&T) might be marginalised. A Technical Baccalaureate (TechBac) is being designed but if it is to be a success, schools should be incentivised to focus on the TechBac by making it equivalent to the EBac. Reforms to vocational education following the Wolf Review meant that Level 2 of the Engineering Diploma, a qualification highly regarded, would count as equivalent to one GCSE despite requiring curriculum time and effort equivalent to several GCSEs. The Engineering Diploma, however, is currently being redesigned as four separate qualifications. The Committee also expressed concerns over the Department for Education's (DfE) lack of clarity on its research budget, and use of evidence in decision-making. The DfE needs to place greater focus on gathering evidence before changes to qualifications are made, and must leave sufficient time for evidence to be gathered on the effectiveness of policies before introducing further change. The possibility of gathering evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) should be seriously considered

Book Description
The authors discuss the dilemmas that face those who would educate tomorrow's valuable citizens and describe the day-to-day commitment needed to maintain a community. Important questions are asked: How do our public schools educate children to become members of our particular "public?" What problems face citizens of a democracy committed to both pluralism and equity? How has the meaning of citizenship changed as our society has evolved? In a world made interdependent through technology, how can one best define citizenship? The book's various perspectives provide guidelines for action through examples of current programs, and the reader is invited to join new forums to discuss questions raised—forums that allow for heated, but civil, disagreement. Only by engaging in such discussions can a public consensus be reached on the best ways to educate for tomorrow. Contributors include John Covaleskie, Ellen Giarelli, James Giarelli, Jerilyn Fay Kelle, Thomas Mauhs-Pugh, Barbara McEwan, Mary B. Stanley, Donald Warren, and Zeus Yiamouyiannis.

Book Description
It is well accepted that education needs to be equalised along gender lines. However, until the management of education is also gender sensitive, that content cannot expect to be effectively communicated. This is the premise of this groundbreaking book. It addresses gender issues and management practices in education, by critically examining both successes and failures drawn from a number of African countries. It proposes ways of improving the management of education to focus on women - who have hitherto been left out of the mainstream of educational and training practices. It throws a uniquely African light on an issue that goes to the heart of the process of democratisation. In order to empower the girl child in the new South Africa and in Africa, the patriarchal and parochial structures that exist within the African educational paradigm need to be broken down and replaced. This would address problems such as: why women are discouraged from certain fields of studies, like sciences; the effect that interactions in learning situations can have on the achievement and attainment of female students; and the critical necessity of educating and training girls in rural Africa. The book speaks to the heart of the administrative processes within the education framework and shows how the way classes are structured or materials selected needs to be adapted in order to correct the present imbalance. It was created and developed with the aim of seeking out the best education management practices, finding common analyses from these and using them to develop guidelines for future education management.
