Book Description
Economic Evaluation of Soviet Socialism examines the economic achievements of Soviet socialism from a variety of perspectives. The Soviet Union's failure to eliminate inflation and its implications for the economy are considered in comparison to a capitalist developed or industrializing economy. The effects of inflation on welfare and efficiency are also discussed. This book is comprised of eight chapters and opens by sketching the distinguishing characteristics of Soviet socialism as well as six major sources of interest in the evaluation of Soviet socialism. The next section deals with three kinds of issues relating to Soviet socialist performance: organizational-structural aspects, economic growth, and efficiency. Questions such as whether the Soviet economy may have been able to obviate the traditional undesirable consequences of inflation are addressed. The growth of the economy and of important macroeconomic aggregates, such as national income, industrial production, and consumption, is also analyzed. The remaining chapters focus on economic efficiency in agriculture and industry in relation to the Soviet price mechanism. This monograph will be of interest to economists, social scientists, policymakers, and government officials.

Book Description
First published in 1979, Political Economy and Soviet Socialism is an integrated selection of papers written over the past 12 years of Russian history, which offers a unique insight into some important and controversial issues. Professor Nove discusses the ideas of some of the leaders of the Russian revolution (Lenin, Trotsky and Bukharin), the political economy of socialism and the problems of the contemporary USSR. The author addresses the role of traditional Russian ideas in shaping the Soviet Union’s social structure and the conceptual problems involved in defining its ruling stratum - whether or not it is a class. He also considers the criteria by which it is reasonable to judge Soviet reality, the performance and prospects of agriculture in communist-ruled Europe, the ability of the Eastern bloc to tackle problems of inflation and the obstacles to economic reform. Looking at the important and original developments of economic thought in the USSR and Eastern Europe, Professor Nove dissects the ideas of the ‘new leftists’ concerning the role of market forces under a feasible socialism. These papers offer essential reading for students of politics, economics and comparative social structure.

Book Description
Although the history of centrally planned economies has been widely studied, the development of socialist thinking on the subject has remained largely uncharted. In this 1991 work, Pekka Sutela presents a detailed analysis of Soviet economic thought and theory. Dr Sutela traces the competing currents in the Marxist tradition of socialist economies from the Revolution to the present day. In particular he shows how the Gorbachev economic reform programme of 1987 rose from the work of Nobel Prize economist L. V. Kantorovich and his followers. However, this programme failed and the author explains in some detail why this happened. Since then, Soviet economists have tried to abandon their traditional theory of central planning and move along the path and long established contacts with leading Soviet economists, Pekka Sutela is able to show how Soviet economic thinking has moved from dogmatism through reformism to pragmatism.
