Book Description
Excerpt from Economic Tangles: Industrial Problems Explained Through Lessons Drawn From Passing Events Economics have so close a relation to continuous prosperity that employers and employed are equally interested in comprehending the laws governing the production and distribution of wealth. These are not difficult to understand. Like the figures in the multiplication table there is a certain relation between land, labor, capital and wealth, and once the student learns the value of each of these elements in the world of industry, he is able to grapple with seemingly inextricable problems which might otherwise lead him astray. There are many byways in economics, however, which look at times so broad and substantial, and are trodden by so vast a multitude, that the wisest are apt to be misled into taking the false for the true. Still, when the real value and dependence of each of the factors in trade and commerce are once realized, it is not so very hard to differentiate the thoroughfares that lead to the equitable distribution among wealth producers of their products, from those that tend to concentration and unjust apportionment. Passing events in the knowledge of general readers of daily papers have in the main been the basis of the articles appearing under my name in the News-Tribune, and which with other material are reproduced in this volume. They do not profess to be either profound or exhaustive, for other duties, as well as space, have prevented any minute discussion, even had it been advisable. Excerpt from Economic Tangles: Industrial Problems Explained Through Lessons Drawn From Passing Events Economic Tangles is printed with no expectation that there is any widespread demand for the book, but because many friends and acquaintances interested in these subjects have suggested the possibility of its being a help to lucid thinking on economic subjects. If it does this in ever so small a measure, it will not have been issued in vain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
In this powerful memoir the the LA Times calls “moving, rigorous, and heartbreaking," Sarah Leavitt reveals how Alzheimer’s disease transformed her mother, Midge, and her family forever. In spare blackand- white drawings and clear, candid prose, Sarah shares her family’s journey through a harrowing range of emotions—shock, denial, hope, anger, frustration—all the while learning to cope, and managing to find moments of happiness. Midge, a Harvard educated intellectual, struggles to comprehend the simplest words; Sarah’s father, Rob, slowly adapts to his new role as full-time caretaker, but still finds time for wordplay and poetry with his wife; Sarah and her sister Hannah argue, laugh, and grieve together as they join forces to help Midge. Tangles confronts the complexity of Alzheimer’s disease, and ultimately releases a knot of memories and dreams to reveal a bond between a mother and a daughter that will never come apart.

Book Description
This book traces the interacting histories of the disciplines of ecology and economics, from their common origin in the ancient Greek concept of oikonomia, through their distinct encounters with energy physics, to the current obstruction of neoliberal economics to responses to the ecological and climate crisis of the so-called Anthropocene. Reconstructing their constitution as separate sciences in the era of fossil-fuelled industrial capitalism, the book offers an explanation of how the ecological sciences have moved from a position of critical collision with mainstream economics in the 1970s, to one of collusion with the project of permanent growth, in and through the thermal crisis of the biosphere.
