Book Description
Excerpt from Ecological Effects of the Lawn Lake Flood of 1982, Rocky Mountain National Park I started to hear a sound like an airplane. Also, there were loud booms. It got louder and louder. I thought it was breaking the sound barrier. I kept looking for a plane but couldn't see one. I got suspicious and started looking upstream. I saw trees crashing over and a wall of water coming down. I started to run as fast as I could for high ground. There was a deafening roar. I fell and got up and kept running. I stood on high ground and watched it wipe out our campsite. It knocked everything in its path over; Steve his camping companion] didn't stand a chance. With these words, Steven Cashman described his harrowing experience with the ood that swept his camping companion to his death in the Roaring River. Other campers along the Roaring River estimated the wall of water to be 8 - 10 m high, carrying with it large trees and boulders, so that the water looked like a wet, brown cloud that sounded like extremely loud continuous thunder, or a freight train, or an airplane breaking the sound barrier. Book Description
This book describes the water resources of Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as the historical ditches, dams and floods in the Park and adjacent areas. The devastating Colorado Big-Thompson Flood of 1976 is summarized. The Lawn Lake Flood of 1982 and its aftermath is discussed in detail. The 2013 Front Range Floods in Colorado are detailed with an emphasis on the area adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The removal or repair of deteriorating historical dams in the Park following the Lawn Lake Flood, and the restoration of the natural lake ecosystems at these sites is discussed. The author describes his hikes to four of the restored lakes, and the interpretive efforts to educate the visitor about the Lawn Lake Flood at the site of the alluvial fan in Horseshoe Park. Finally, the author summarizes the visitor impacts on the Park with overcrowding, and the demands of a growing Front Range population on the water resources of the area.

Book Description
Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Description
The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
