Book Description
Excerpt from Echoes From the Distant Battlefield In presenting this little volume to the public I am prompted by a single purpose. That purpose is to pay tribute to the Honor Roll boys from the church of which I have the proud distinction to be pastor. This Honor Roll bespeaks more eloquently than could words a story of red-blooded young manhood that went forth in defense of human rights - went forth gladly to pay the supreme sacrifice if needs be. Many of these boys were in military service near home, others in the various camps, others intrenched overseas, and still others went "over the top" never to return in the ghastly European carnage that ended on November 11, 1918. With the hope that they may also prove in some degree both interesting and helpful to others, I am herewith publishing excerpts from letters that I received from the boys, together with the letters that I sent to them. Book Description
Shortly after I had returned from a foreign trip some years ago, an old friend saw me and quickly noticed that I had gone partially bald. He was startled. So, he spontaneously yelled a seemingly tough question at me: What happened to the hairs on your head? Spontaneously too, I yelled an answer back at him: Nature took them in place of the wisdom that I couldnt pay for! And we teased and laughed. My friend thought I had joked, but I knew I hadnt. However, Ill leave the judgment to you. By the time youre done digesting the substance of this more than compelling masterpiece, Id like to know your stand. Had I joked or had I not?

Book Description
Twenty-year old Michigan farm boy Will Castor finds his life changed forever as he is thrust into the harsh realities of nineteenth-century combat on the last day of the battle of Chickamauga. Wounded physically and mentally, Will escapes the battlefield aided by a war weary Confederate deserter, but can't escape the echoes of death and horror that will remain with him for the rest of his life. Returning to Michigan after the war, Will deals with guilt and recurring nightmares from his war experience, finding relief in the numbing effects of a bottle of whiskey and the bawdy houses of East Saginaw. He joins the rough and tumble world of Michigan's lumber boom as a land looker seeking the majestic white pine. Alone in the vast northern Michigan wilderness, he comes face to face with his demons and must make a life or death decision.

Book Description
Excerpt from Echoes From the Battlefield or Southern Life During the War After a lapse of many years a retrospective mood possessed my thoughts, and for abrief period I was no longer a man but a boy full of life, and was once more playing with other children on the grounds of the old homestead, enjoying myself as only a healthy lad can; and while thus musing every scene in the grand but cruel panorama of war passed rapidly before my vision and tempted me so strongly that I could not resist the temptation to write and leave to my only child a true record of events as they occurred during that stormy period of our civil war. This is the only apology I can offer for this faulty little publication; but since it is finished, I now offer it to all who are willing to pass its imperfections by; and hope that some of its readers who were so fortunate as to escape the realities of war may by its perusal glean something of interest. And may some of the characters in it be found worthy of emulation. I have added some very beautiful poems by the best of authors, which will be found ex.
