Book Description
Attempts to understand why African and Americans are over-represented in United States crime statistics have been made complex by the existence of a multiplicity of explanations. Every adult in the United States seems to know what causes crime, and is prepared to present some seasoned argument in support of their view. Because of the existence of this divergence, attempts to device a viable format for solving either the crime problem, the discrimination problem or the over representation problem continues to be difficult. Important aspects of authentic jurisprudence that acknowledge the need to examine a victim's contribution to the criminal event, retributive justice and collective responsibility, are essential attributes of traditional African culture. These attributes are conspicuously absent in the official social control systems that currently exist in the United States. This book suggests that to reduce or eliminate African American involvement in crime therefore, it is necessary to incorporate those attributes of equity and justice, which are essential components of the traditional legal systems of their ancestors into our official social control systems. Such incorporation will help to reconnect African Americans with their ancestral lgbo culture, reinforce their knowledge of African history, strengthen their self esteem and encourage the development of pride in their African heritage. It will also help to reduce their involvement as victims or participants in anti social behavior, and eventually solve the overreprentation problem.

Book Description
Relatively recent Bantu-speaking migrants to central Cameroon, the Beti have had an eventful history. Based on extensive interviews and traditional Beti (Fang) poetry, in addition to German and French archival sources, the author of this readable study recreates the social structure of the Beti and their self-perceptions in pre-colonial times, their disruptive encounters with first German (1880-1918) and then French (1918-1960) colonialism, until Cameroon’s independence.

Book Description
Gender, Migration and Development in Africa: Igbo Women in the Diaspora and Community Development in Southeastern Nigeria provides a unique approach to the study of the role of Igbo women in the diaspora to community development in Igboland. Utilizing primary sources, specifically, migration stories of women and the groups they form in the United States and other parts of the world, the book highlights the dynamism in the zeal to give back to their communities of origin in Igboland. The book seeks to affirm the propensity of Igbo women to evolve through personal efforts and formation of social groups to extend humanitarian services to underprivileged individuals and societies in Igboland. Through several community development programs, they have provided needed medical and educational supplies, hospital equipment, supplies and sponsored several medical missions in different parts of the Igboland. This book further counters the previously understudied role of women in development. Through a comprehensive documentation of the various programs and projects completed by the groups and individual charities, readers and policy makers will be inspired to appreciate the efforts of the various groups and extend needed support and assistance to the groups. The findings in the book reveal the increasing shift from the brain drain concept to brain circulation and networking within the Igbo women community. They are positively utilizing the skills and resources acquired from their host communities to engage in the development processes through remittances and social development projects. The study reinforces the trends and ideas that the improvement of African societies may well depend on the contributions of Africans outside the continent, especially women.
