Book Description
Excerpt from Some Old Time, Meeting Houses of the Connecticut Valley The difficulty of deciding what examples to include and what to exclude in the treatment of his subject has been almost as great as that experienced by some of the first settlements in setting a stake for the meeting house lot. The governing principle has been the illustration of the churches built between 1780 and 1850. A few houses of worship built in the earlier periods of the history of the region are included, and the pen sketches are meant to tell the story of meeting house building in the Connecticut Valley from the beginning down to the erection of the latest examples of Colonial buildings. Many worthy examples have been omitted, and a few houses of worship have been included whose architectural value is small, but which for other reasons the author has been pleased to use in the illustration of his subject. It will be seen that almost every variety of meeting house known to the Connecticut Valley prior to 1850 is represented in the following pages. Book Description
Excerpt from Valley Towns of Connecticut The Connecticut Valley is a very thankful object for such studies. It is really a double valley, being divided into two unequal parts by the chain of trap ridges which extends from New Haven'to Holyoke and beyond. The valley east of the ridges has the present river; it will therefore be designated by the name of River Valley. The valley west of the ridges has at present no connected watercourse; its line of lowest depression is divided up among several smaller watercourses running in different directions but leading practically nowhere. According to its drainage it may be divided into two parts in its turn: the northern part, generally speaking, drains into the Connecticut by way of the Farmington River, and its southern limit is, approximately, the town of Cheshire; we shall designate it as the Farmington Valley. The southern part drains into the Sound by various small rivers converging more or less toward New Haven, and it will be called the New Haven Valley (fig. I). This natural division into an eastern, or River Valley, western, or Farmington Valley, and southern, or. New Haven Valley, we shall find repeated in. The political history of the Valley settlements. Book Description
Excerpt from Life Along the Connecticut River The four Connecticut lakes which store the waters coming down from the spongy trout brooks and start the long river on its course lie some sixteen hundred feet nearer the clouds than does the river's mouth. Back Lake, First, Second, and Third Connecticut Lakes are their names, and although not gems they are deserving of something more descriptive than numbers. They all lie within the town of Pittsburg which, with its 360 square miles, is about ten times the area of the average New England township, but it has a population of only 67 1 which means more than half a square mile to every inhabitant, plenty of room to provide a refuge for all the non-aryans.
