Book Description
Excerpt from Dummer Academy, South Byfield, Massachusetts: 1905-1906 Character is the prime objective in life. In large measure, it is the product of environment. Proper environment consists of three influences, association with good companions, the teaching and example of older persons, and natural surroundings. A good home, well situated, furnishes just such environment, and second only to the home in this respect is the best Home School. Dummer Academy with its cottage system is such a school, with sound manhood for its fundamental aim. As in a good home the parents set a proper example, so in school life the teachers with whom boys are constantly associated should exert only an influence for true character. Our teachers, by per sonal example and kindly correction, endeavor to inculcate good manners, thoughtful consideration, and steadfast purpose which mark the true gentleman. The reading room is supplied with wholesome periodicals, and the library, as a branch of the Newburyport Public Library, enables the boys to have a wide selection of the best reading. The Academy lecture course brings to the school the cultivating influence of trained minds, which awakens interest and stimulates investigation into subjects which give breadth and depth to human life. Handbook of American Private Schools
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Private schools
Languages : en
Pages : 1240
Book Description
This handbook aims to be a guide to the best private schools of the country. It has been undertaken with the parent especially in mind, but it is hoped that it may be of value to school and college authorities and all others interested in the subject. It is believed that this Handbook is the first volume which attempts a critical and discriminating treatment of the private schools of the country. It is an endeavor to classify the schools on their merits -- at least a step, it is hoped, toward eventual standardization. - Editor's foreword.
