In 2020, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) celebrates 30 years since its adoption. To date, 50 African States have ratified the ACRWC, and 28 have submitted the initial report, 12 have submitted both initial and periodic reports to the African Committee of Experts on the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) on the implementation of the ACRWC and have received recommendations from the ACERWC. To ascertain the extent of children’s rights protection in Africa, the Centre for Human Rights was commissioned to undertake a study on the implementation of the ACRWC in 10 countries, namely: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Sudan and Tanzania. In-country researchers were engaged to collect data using desk-based research to obtain information consisting of literature, documents and online sources that was then thematically analysed.

Four dissimilar cases of agricultural mechanization in different regions of Ethiopia are described and analyzed for potential benefits, costs, and compatability with certain objectives selected from the Ethiopian Third Five-Year Plan. The broad definition of mechanization is employed: any form of mechanical assistance used in agricultural technology, facilitates consideration of any agricultural system in Ethiopia as a potential site for mechanization. Objectives of the thesis are: to present production data over a period of ten years for which farm budgeting is employed; to analyze the financial data with benefit-cost techniques to relate certain non-financial aspects of these cases to objectives specified in Ethiopian development plans for which index trendswere estimated; to demonstrate the types pf data required for economic analyses of agricultural mechanization; to demonstrate the applicability of the methodology to four different agricultural systems. Systems are classified as employing hand-, animal-, or engine-pwered technology. The selected cases depict four alternative options open to policy-makers interested in improving agricultural mechanized technology in Ethiopia. Mechanization is regarded as a process of improvement or transition. Potential commercial viability is the principal criterion employed for selection of cases. No value is placed in mechanization per se without economic justification for proposed changes. Hence, introduction of cash crops into the agricultural systems are essential.

The Lives of Stone Tools gives voice to the Indigenous Gamo lithic practitioners of southern Ethiopia. For the Gamo, their stone tools are alive, and their work in flintknapping is interwoven with status, skill, and the life histories of their stone tools. Anthropologist Kathryn Weedman Arthur offers insights from her more than twenty years working with the Gamo. She deftly addresses historical and present-day experiences and practices, privileging the Gamo’s perspectives. Providing a rich, detailed look into the world of lithic technology, Arthur urges us to follow her into a world that recognizes Indigenous theories of material culture as valid alternatives to academic theories. In so doing, she subverts long-held Western perspectives concerning gender, skill, and lifeless status of inorganic matter. The book offers the perspectives that, contrary to long-held Western views, stone tools are living beings with a life course, and lithic technology is a reproductive process that should ideally include both male and female participation. Only individuals of particular lineages knowledgeable in the lives of stones may work with stone technology. Knappers acquire skill and status through incremental guided instruction corresponding to their own phases of maturation. The tools’ lives parallel those of their knappers from birth (procurement), circumcision (knapping), maturation (use), seclusion (storage), and death (discardment).
