College attrition represents a serious and persistent problem for ethnic minority students. Although there has been a plethora of research examining retention rates, most have focused on difficulty paying for college and financial strain. Importantly, past studies suggest that minority stress in the form of discrimination and lack of support on campus represents an additional barrier for African American students at predominantly White four-year institutions. The current study furthers our understanding of the experience of African American students by focusing on a previously unstudied race-related stress: systemic racism. Furthermore, the current investigation focuses on mental and physical health outcomes among students, in addition to academic outcomes which have been traditionally studied. Finally, this study examines the role of support from kin, same race friends, and religiosity as potential buffers from the impact of systemic-racism related stress. A sample of 472 students with mean age of 20.65 (SD=1.53), of which 99 identified as Black/African American and 373 as White/European American or Caucasian was recruited from a large public university. The results indicate that African American students perceived higher levels of systemic-racism related stress than their European American counterparts. Among African American respondents, systemic-racism related stress was related to lower levels of academic engagement, after control for general and undergraduate stress. Among European American students higher levels of systemic-racism related stress were related to higher levels of academic engagement. The study also finds that having many same race college friends reduces racism-related stress among African American students, while high levels of kinship support are related to higher levels of racism-related stress. Ethnic identity and racial socialization buffered the negative impact of racism-related stress on health outcomes, but only at low levels of stress. Similarly, kinship support was related to better outcomes at low levels of stress, but had no positive impact on physical or mental health outcomes at high levels of racism-related stress. Finally, religious participation and spirituality were related to lower levels of mental and physical health functioning for college students. However, at high levels of racism-stress, students with high levels of religiosity reported better adjustment than students with low levels of religiosity. The results hold important implications for the mental and physical health functioning of ethnic minority college students.

Experiences of racial discrimination are particularly salient amongst African American youth (García Coll et al., 1996; Williams & Mohammed, 2009; English et. al 2014). Racial discrimination has been associated with poorer psychosocial development, including higher depressive symptoms, lower self-esteem, higher anxiety, etc, (Bank et al., 2006; Gaylord-Harden & Cunningham, 2009; English et al., 2014). Furthermore, literature provides sufficient evidence for the buffering effect of ethnic/racial socialization, in particular cultural socialization, and active coping skills on the mental health of African American youth in the context of perceived racial discrimination (Spencer et al., 1997; Wang & Benner, 2016). The current study aimed to investigate the impact of perceived racial discrimination (PRD) on depression across three years. Furthermore, this study explored the mediating role of active coping and the moderating role of cultural socialization on the the relationship between PRD and depression. These research aims were explored using the theoretical framework PVEST and theory provided by Cynthia García Coll, which consider the ecological factors that influence the development of children of color and the cultural specific coping mechanism that protect their well-being (García Coll et al., 1996; Spencer et al., 1997). The sample consisted of self-reports from 146 African American adolescents from the Maryland Adolescent Development in Context Study (MADICS; Eccles, 1992). Data was collected across three time points (Wave4, Wave5 and Wave6). In wave 4, participants were in their junior year of high school. Participants were reassessed when they were 1 year out of high school (Wave 5), and again three years after high school (Wave 6). During each time point, participants were assessed on their perceptions of discrimination, depressive symptoms, cultural socialization practices, and problem solving skills. Hierarchical regressions, cross-lagged analyses, and mediation and moderation models were used in the data analyses. Contrary to our hypothesis, only few paths between PRD and Discrimination were significant concurrently and longitudinally. Moreover, we found that active coping did not significantly mediate the relationship between PRD and discrimination over time. Lastly, cultural socialization did not moderate the relationship between this relationship over time.

The college environment provides a host of stressful exposures as a result of students being immersed in a new academic and social environment. Certain coping strategies used to alleviate stress (e.g., avoidance) are related to an increase in negative behaviors and mental health problems, which can be exacerbated in college students. However, other coping strategies, such as social support and religion, have been shown to promote psychological health. African Americans/Blacks tend to underutilize mental health care services despite the greater likelihood of certain stressors such as racial discrimination compared to Caucasians/Whites. Furthermore, African American/Black college students are underrepresented in coping research. The goal of the study was to evaluate whether the relationship between social support and religious coping strategies and psychological health is different for African American/Black college students compared to Caucasian/White college students. It was hypothesized that African American/Black students would use more social support and religious coping strategies than Caucasians/Whites, and that race would moderate the relation between these coping strategies and both positive and negative affect. Data were collected from a sample of 170 undergraduate students (18.8% African American/Black, 81.2% Caucasian/White) who participated in a larger study on coping that utilized an internet-based daily diary design. Participants responded to questionnaires that assessed daily stressful events, use of coping strategies, positive affect, and negative affect over the course of five days. To account for variation at the individual level and repeated measures, analysis was conducted using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). Racial differences were found in the frequency of certain aspects of coping, specifically higher use among African American/Black students of seeking God’s help and talking to family about how they were feeling as compared to Caucasian/White students. No racial moderation of the coping-affect relations was found, however. Findings also suggested a lack of racial differences in cultural values. Further research should continue to explore the relation between coping mechanisms and different measures of psychological health, while considering the potential contributing effects of racial differences.
