The researcher used the intuitive inquiry method to interview Protestant Christians about their unitive mystical experiences. The unitive mystical experience is an experience of being one with God or the universe knowing ultimate love, peace, or truth. Thirteen adult participants described in an interview format whether or not they were living in accordance with the new knowledge received in their experience. This is defined for the purpose of this study as authenticity. The researcher transcribed the interviews, verified each transcript with each participant, used thematic analysis to identify themes, and invited outside interview readers to confirm or refute the researcher's identified themes. All participants reported a change in their values and behaviors due to their experiences. Participants also verified the 12 themes that the researcher compiled as the research results. Two important findings are that the participants have an increased connection and feeling of responsibility to Spirit, people, and the world; and participants experience a surrendering of ego and self while opening to the Divine immediately before or during these experiences. Transpersonal authenticity is a termed coined by the researcher and supported by this research and other literature to describe the relationship between the unitive mystical experience and authenticity. One conclusion of this study is that the unitive mystical experience does affect authenticity, and this path of authenticity is personally unique to each individual.

Craig Woelfel seeks to answer this pivotal question in Varieties of Aesthetic Experience: Literary Modernism and Dissociation of Belief, a groundbreaking exploration of the relationship between secular modernity and religious engagement. Woelfel hinges his argument on the unlikely comparison of two revered modern writers: T. S. Eliot and E. M. Forster. They had vastly different experiences with religion, as Eliot converted to Christianity later in life and Forster became a steadfast nonbeliever over time, but Woelfel contends that their stories offer a compelling model for belief as broken and ambivalent rather than constant. Narratives of faith—its loss or gain—are no longer linear but instead are just as fractured and varied as the modernists themselves. Carl Albrecht: Psychology of Mystical Consciousness is the first English translation of the ground-breaking study by the German medical doctor, psychotherapist and mystic Carl Albrecht (1902-1965), first published in 1951 as Psychologie des Mystischen Bewu tseins. The book, reprinted in Germany in 1976, 1990 and 2018, has remained untranslated to date and is now made available to international scholarship in an annotated English edition. The book offers the results of Albrecht's meticulous long-term empirical research into mystical consciousness. Albrecht's results are unique in that they derive from a pioneering methodological approach based on 'Autogenic Training', which enabled a practitioner to verbalize spontaneously what he/she is experiencing while immersed in an altered state of consciousness. These spontaneous utterances of mystical (and non-mystical) experience were concurrently recorded by Albrecht (supplemented by his own utterances recorded by a confidante) and provided him with invaluable empirical data for his detailed phenomenological analyses. The outcome was a most comprehensive, systematic psychological phenomenology of mystical consciousness informed by long-term empirical research, which is unique as regards authenticity, immediacy and scope. Unlike other empirical studies in this field, which are either based on records of mystical experience retrieved retrospectively, or derived from behaviorist research, or both, Albrecht's empirical data originate from immediate (not rationally mediated) verbal testimonies spoken by subjects while transported into a mystical state, in addition to records of great mystics from Eastern and Western mystical traditions.
