As a group, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender, questioning, intersex, and two-spirit (LGBTQI2-S) individuals have been consistently stigmatized and targeted by society because of their sexual orientation. In the military, homosexuality has been significantly incompatible with military service. Although policies have changed throughout the years, the impact and negative consequences of some practices on gay service members have been detrimental. Additionally, there are limited educational programs and curricula that teach about the rich diversity of LGBTQI2-S veterans and their healthcare needs. Although LGBTQI2-S individuals appear to be at increased risk for particular health and psychiatric conditions, the shared experience of stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings and from health care professionals appear to reinforce pathology in the LGBTQI2-S population and account for most health disparities. The Diversity Alliance Program is tailored to provide cultural competency and sensitivity training to all Veterans Health Administration employees who provide direct services to LGBTQI2-S veterans in order to ensure the delivery of sensitive, affirmative, and culturally appropriate healthcare services in order to reduce stigma, overcome treatment barriers, reduce disparities, and improve health outcomes.
