Book Description
Excerpt from The Fractional Distillation of Coal-Tar Creosote This assumption is not in accordance with the facts, as might be expected, for the reason that the creosote oil is an entirely different mixture from the original crude coal tar, and consequently the temperatures at which these various compounds or mixtures volatilize are materially altered. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Distillation of Coal-Tar and Ammoniacal Liquor, and the Separation From Them of Valuable Products Tm; distillation of coal-tar and the manufacture of ammoniacal compounds, which, for obvious reasons, is intimately connected with the former, have not previously been subjected to monographic treatment in the English language, although that industry is one of the most important branches among English chemical manu factures. Even in foreign languages, well-nigh the only special treatise on this subject is one published in the German language by the author in 1867. That treatise was principally founded on the author's own practical experience, and was very favourably received in Germany; but it is necessarily antiquated to some extent now, and many inquiries for a new edition have been made from time to time. This induced the author, in 1880. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Treasures of Coal Tar In order that the effort now being made to promote the more widespread application of science, and more especially to render this country independent of others for the supply of the dyes necessary for the maintenance of om textile industry, shall not be relaxed, it is essential that the people as a whole should interest themselves in the work, and should gain some knowledge of what has been achieved in the past, and some understanding of the nature and complexity of the problems to be solved. As the matter is urgent, and of vital importance for the welfare of this country, the writer felt that, even in a time of much preoccupation, he could not refuse the invitation of the publishers to discuss in a readily intelligible manner the production and utilisation of coal tar, and to indicate, sufffiently fully for the general reader, the almost infinite variety of materials dyes, drug, perfumes, explosives for the manufacture of which coal tar is the raw material. Book Description
Excerpt from Destructive Distillation: A Manualette of the Paraffin, Coal Tar, Rosin Oil, Petroleum, and Kindred Industries Destructive distillation is a very ancient industry, whose intricate and numerous problems have been from time to time investigated by the ablest chemists. Its study has thus had a prominent influence in developing the science of Chemistry. This little book is the first to present as a whole the industry of destructive distillation. Its contents are the substance of a course of lectures delivered in Anderson's College, Glasgow, in 1875 - 76, and illustrated by actual inspection of many of the processes to which it refers. Students will profit most from its perusal who have such illustration at command; and manufacturers will, it is hoped, be interested in the modern principles of the science that underlies their processes, and reap some advantage from learning how others treat the very same problems that are presented to themselves. The author begs to express his sincere thanks to the managers of works and other friends who with much kindness, and sometimes with much trouble, have con tributed to his information on this important subject. Book Description
Excerpt from Examination of Low Temperature Coal Tar: Dissertation Submitted in Partial Ful llment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Pure Science, Columbia University, in the City of New York The composition of this tar indicates a stage in the decomposition of the primary liquid distillates of coal which hitherto has not been carefully studied. In a second installment it is intended to define more precisely several distillation reactions, and to present a new view point on the much disputed mechanism of the carboniza tion of coal. Thus, a rational basis will be found for reconciling to a large extent the reported differences in the composition of low-temperature coal tars.
