Book Description
From the fluttering fabric of a tent, to the blurred motion of the potter’s wheel, to the rhythm of a horse puppet’s wooden hooves—these scenes make up a set of mid-1980s art exhibitions as part of the U.S. Festival of India. The festival was conceived at a meeting between Indira Gandhi and Ronald Reagan to strengthen relations between the two countries at a time of late Cold War tensions and global economic change, when America’s image of India was as a place of desperate poverty and spectacular fantasy. Displaying Time unpacks the intimate, small-scale durations of time at work in the gallery from the transformation of clay into ceramic to the one-on-one, personal encounters between museum visitors and artists. Using extensive archival research and interviews with artists, curators, diplomats, and visitors, Rebecca Brown analyzes a selection of museum shows that were part of the Festival of India to unfurl new exhibitionary modes: the time of transformation, of interruption, of potential and the future, as well as the contemporary and the now.

Book Description
Focusing on the exploration of data with visual methods, this book presents methods and R code for producing high-quality static graphics, interactive visualizations, and animations of time series, spatial, and space-time data. Practical examples using real-world datasets help you understand how to apply the methods and code. Each of the three parts of the book is devoted to different types of data. In each part, the chapters are grouped according to the various visualization methods or data characteristics. Recent developments in the "htmlwidgets" family of packages are covered in this second edition with many new interactive graphics.

Book Description
An experimental study was made to assess the effectiveness of two techniques for rapid screening to select imagery frames of high military potential and to determine the effects of variations in display time on screening performance. Two samples of image interpreters, each consisting of three matched groups, screened three sets of imagery at three different display time intervals (5, 15, and 25 seconds per frame for Sample 1; 10, 20, and 30 seconds per frame for Sample 2). Each interpreter was instructed to perform two screening functions while scanning each print--(1) annotate on the frame all areas of military activity he detected; and (2) assign to each print a priority rating of High, Medium, or Low to indicate estimated intelligence value of the frame. Interpreter performance under the two methods was compared in terms of accuracy and validity of the annotations and priority ratings across the six screening time intervals. Results of the study definitely favored the priority ratings technique over annotation screening. The ratings, of high accuracy even with short viewing time, improved significantly both in accuracy and in validity with longer display time. Generally, performance was better on the measures which were less complex and showed fewer target areas. Validity of the number of annotations on a frame, generally low, did not vary significantly with display time. More incorrect as well as correct annotations were made, a finding similar to previous BESRL findings for unspeeded interpretation performance.

Book Description
This is a report on the present "state of the art" in the development of a system for using electroluminescent indicators for digital display of timing information on motion picture film. It was found that a display, in the form of a matrix of dots, could be contact printed onto color film with an exposure time of one millisecond.

Book Description
In Show Time, Lee Ann Fujii asks why some perpetrators of political violence, from lynch mobs to genocidal killers, display their acts of violence so publicly and extravagantly. Closely examining three horrific and extreme episodes—the murder of a prominent Tutsi family amidst the genocide in Rwanda, the execution of Muslim men in a Serb-controlled village in Bosnia during the Balkan Wars, and the lynching of a twenty-two-year old Black farmhand on Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1933—Fujii shows how "violent displays" are staged to not merely to kill those perceived to be enemies or threats, but also to affect and influence observers, neighbors, and the larger society. Watching and participating in these violent displays profoundly transforms those involved, reinforcing political identities, social hierarchies, and power structures. Such public spectacles of violence also force members of the community to choose sides—openly show support for the goals of the violence, or risk becoming victims, themselves. Tracing the ways in which public displays of violence unfold, Show Time reveals how the perpetrators exploit the fluidity of social ties for their own ends.

Book Description
How does a visual artist manage to narrate a story, which has a sequential and therefore temporal progression, using a static medium consisting solely of spatial sign elements and, what is more, in a single image? This is the question on which this work is based, posed by its designer, Alberto Argenton, to whose memory it is dedicated. The first explanation usually given by scholars in the field is that the artist solves the problem by depicting the same character in a number of scenes, thus giving indirect evidence of events taking place at different times. This book shows that artists, in addition to the repetition of characters, devise other spatial perceptual-representational strategies for organising the episodes that constitute a story and, therefore, showing time. Resorting to the psychology of art of a Gestalt matrix, the book offers researchers, graduates, advanced undergraduates, and professionals a description of a large continuous pictorial narrative repertoire (1000 works) and an in-depth analysis of the perceptual-representational strategies employed by artists from the 6th to the 17th century in a group of 100 works narrating the story of Adam and Eve.

Book Description
Computing time dependent power spectra is an important method for studying nonstationarities in signals. An efficient procedure for computing such spectra and displaying them immediately is requisite for effective application. The method presented is based on a date window which moves along the signal in unit increments. The spectrum is updated for each new sample. All spectra are displayed on a computer graphic terminal and the algorithm was deliberately constructed to make computer graphic display efficient. (Author).
