The objective of this project is to study the theory and measurement of dispersion during miscible flow in heterogeneous nonuniform anisotropic porous media. An understanding of the dispersion phenomenon is necessary to predict flow of miscible fluids in non-homgeneous porous media. A significant literature review of dispersion in non-homogeneous porous media was accomplished. The continuum and statistical theories of flow in porous media were studied. A series of experiments in models of unconsolidated porous media were run to study the effects of heterogeneity, nonuniformity, and anisotropy on dispersion. The non-homogeneities are defined in relation to permeability of the media and dispersion coefficients are correlated with respect to permeability. Tracer output curves from models were interpreted for dispersion. Dispersion changes significantly with permeability. When models of different permeability are connected, the dispersive effect is not reciprocal. Dispersion changes significantly with nonuniformity. Likewise there is a significant effect when models of different nonuniformity are interconnected (second-order heterogeneity). Anisotropy was included in two kinds of models (linear and radial) by packing alternate layers of beads causing flow through these layers at different angles. The usual dispersion model is not adequate for "block box" prediction of the tracer output curve for data on anisotropic shperes. The results have immediate practical applicates, especially in tracing of contaminents in surface and subsurface flow such as movement of pesticides, fertilizers, acid mine drainage, feed-lot waste, etc. through the soil.

The main aim of this paper is to present some new and general results, ap plicable to the the equations of two phase flow, as formulated in geothermal reservoir engineering. Two phase regions are important in many geothermal reservoirs, especially at depths of order several hundred metres, where ris ing, essentially isothermal single phase liquid first begins to boil. The fluid then continues to rise, with its temperature and pressure closely following the saturation (boiling) curve appropriate to the fluid composition. Perhaps the two most interesting theoretical aspects of the (idealised) two phase flow equations in geothermal reservoir engineering are that firstly, only one component (water) is involved; and secondly, that the densities of the two phases are so different. This has led to the approximation of ignoring capillary pressure. The main aim of this paper is to analyse some of the consequences of this assumption, especially in relation to saturation changes within a uniform porous medium. A general analytic treatment of three dimensional flow is considered. Pre viously, three dimensional modelling in geothermal reservoirs have relied on numerical simulators. In contrast, most of the past analytic work has been restricted to one dimensional examples.

Forty-five scientists attended the conference, and about thirty papers were presented. Fourteen manuscripts were submitted for the proceedings and are incorporated in this volume; they cover a number of aspects of flow and transport in porous media. Indeed, there are 223 individual references in the fourteen papers, but fewer than fifteen are cited in more than one paper. The papers appear in alphabetical order (on the basis of the first author). A brief introduction to each paper is given below. Allen and Curran consider a variety of questions related to the simulation of ground water contamination. Accurate water velocities are essential for acceptable results, and the authors apply mixed finite elements to the pressure equation to obtain these ve locities. Since fine grids are required to resolve heterogenei ties, standard iterative procedures are too slow for practical simulation; the authors introduce a parallelizable, multigrid-based it.erative scheme for the lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed method. Contaminant transport is approximated through a finite element collocation procedure, and an alternating-direction, modified method of characteristics technique is employed to time-step the simulation. Computational experiments carried out on an nCube 2 computer.
