Book Description
Excerpt from Diseases of the Bones It is important to remember that osteitis deformans is almost invariably seen at the time of [life when the incidence of malignant disease is the greatest. The duration of malignant disease is at most a few years while in the case of - osteitis deformans life is often prolonged twenty or even thirty years after the development of bone deformity. That the coexistence of the two diseases is common must be admitted but SO far as any definite etiologic relationship between the processes in the two diseases is concerned we have no evidence. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Bones Bone possesses in its healthy state but little sensibility. But under circumstances of disease, its sensibility often becomes wonderfully ex alted. Thus I have witnessed the manifestation of pain as acute from the penetration of an inflamed bone by a saw or trephine as from the incisions of inflamed soft parts. We Observe, moreover, the granula: tions from diseased bone participating in' the morbid sensibility of' its tissue. Such being the vital properties of bone, it IS very liable to disease and its diseases are many, when compared with the diseases of muscle, tendon, or nerve, or indeed of any other organ or tissue. Book Description
Excerpt from Diseases of Bones and Joints This book is put forward by its author, not without some misgivings. The whole subject of diseases of bones and joints is undergoing a rapid development, and is being transferred from the realm of empiricism to that of scientific study. While we must avoid going too fast, and taking up every idea without sufficient supporting evidence, we must not lag behind with those who complacently regard almost all arthropathies and osteopathies as manifestations of "rheumatism," and treat them in a manner that may be named most charitably as routine. The work represents an effort to present the subject as briefly as possible, dealing with the various diseases, in the matter of space, very much as their relative frequency. It is intended primarily for the general practitioner, but, contrary to custom, instead of furnishing that long suffering and very important person with a mass of detail, and with many methods of treatment from which he may choose, attempts to lay down broad general principles, with the evidence on which they are based, and then to show how these principles may be applied. In other words, it demands as little faith as possible on the part of the reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Anatomy, Physiology, and Diseases of the Bones and Joints It had been my intention, originally, to illustrate some of the most important diseases of the bones and joints, as well as some of the principal apparatus used in the treat ment of fractures, by means of plates; but upon more ma ture reflection, it was thought best, at least for the present, to omit them, as the expense of the work would thereby be materially enhanced, and probably prevent many of those, for whom it is chiefly designed, from possessing it. Book Description
Excerpt from Diseases of the Bones and Joints: Clinical Studies In whatever tissues of the body one studies the changes produced by the tubercle bacillus the histological picture is practically always the same. Differences in structure of these tissues may render one region of the body a little less or a little more resistant to invasion than another, but the virulence of the invading organism and the relative constitutional immunity of the patient are of more import ance in this connection than the Character of tissues invaded. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of Bones and Joints Acquire knowledge, however, by this kind of teaching is a slow process, so tedious that few students appreciate the advantage of watching a patient day by day to his recovery, or to the examination which is made after death. Nevertheless, there can be no question that experience acquired in this way is the only true foundation upon which a young medical man can safely rely during his professional career. My aim has been to lead my pupils, by the exercise of their sight, touch, and hearing, to gain a practical knowledge of surgery, which in systematic lectures or books they can only imperfectly receive from the description of others. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise of the Diseases of the Bones: Containing an Exact and Compleat Account of the Nature, Signs, Causes and Cures Thereof, in All Their Various Kinds Surgery; and the Authors I had read, had not written any Thing better. The Foreigners, and the Students of our Nation, who were present at my private Lectures, were so well satisfied with them, that they desired 1 would give them my Dictates; but as 1 had not transcrib'd any Thing upon that Head, I proposed their writing down, themselves, what they remembered of my Lessons, promising to make what Corrections and Additions were necessary therein. They did so; I kept my Word; and from the Lectures I then read, a rough Draught was formed, whereon I have worked with tolerable Success. Book Description
Excerpt from On the Injuries and Diseases of Bones: Eing Selections From the Collected; Edition of the Clinical Lectures of Baron Dupuytren; Translated and Edited by F. Le Gros Clark In acknowledging the honour which the Council of the Sydenham Society has conferred on me, in requesting me to translate and edit a Volume, comprising all the papers on the Injuries and Diseases of the Bones, contained in Professor Dupuytren's Lecons Orales, ' I take the opportunity of subjoining the following introductory remarks, in explanation of the scope, objects and arrangement of the work. In the original, the articles in question are scattered through the first two volumes of the 'Lecons Orales, ' without any regard to appropriate collocation. Moreover, much confusion is the consequence of frequent and sudden changes from the first to the third person; - the Professor being made sometimes to speak in the former, at others in the latter; or, again, his Editors speak for him, or quote his opinions. In the translation it has been thought desirable to impart an uniform style to the work; as well as to render the French into corresponding idiomatic English as far as was compatible with a strict adherence to the meaning of the author. To carry out this intention a paraphrastic translation has been, in a measure, rendered essential. Compression also has been resorted to in details generally; and many of the cases have been abridged, especially in those parts of them which have no immediate reference to the subjects under consideration. Book Description
Excerpt from Injuries Diseases of the Bones and Joints: Their Differential Diagnosis by Means of the Roentgen Rays The Technical side of roentgenology has been so ably described by various author that mention of it is more repetition, therefore, we have in this book, confined our selves to the study of the finished product - the plate. Our object then, is to show that roentgenology is not a picture process, but a medical procedure based upon careful analysis and logical deductions from the shadows observed upon a plate and the translation of these shadows into pathological terms. The constituent parts of the normal bones and their functions have been discussed; and with these as a basis, the lesions have been studied and correlated with the gross pathological findings of the operating and autopsy rooms. Age and sex play such an important role in the production, character and situation of the lesion that we have linked them up with the x-ray plate in arriving at a diagnostic conclusion. Inasmuch as the pathological findings and classifications in certain types of bone and joint lesions are not yet thoroughly established, we may state that in the same way our interpretations of the x-ray shadows of these lesions also may be subject to revision in the light of further pathological investigations. No attempt has been made to give a bibliography, as this book is the result of our observations in the clinic of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In this connection we wish to express our appreciation for the assistance given us by the x-ray Staff of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
