Book Description
The canonical legacy of Allan Sekula in contemporary visual art “Disassembled” Images takes as a point of departure Allan Sekula’s productive approach of disassembling elements in order to reassemble them in alternative constellations. Some of the most pressing issues of our time, such as human labor in a globalized economy or the claim for radical democracy, are recurrent themes in Sekula’s oeuvre and are investigated by a wide range of experts in this book. Addressing a variety of artworks, both by Sekula and other artists, the collected essays focus on three crucial aspects within recent politically engaged art: collecting as a tool for representing folly and madness, the confrontation of the maritime space of ecological disasters and geopolitical processes with alternative models of solidarity, and what Sekula named “critical realism” as a reflective method in search of new social agencies and creative freedom. A text–image portfolio by Marco Poloni completes this profound reflection on Sekula’s influential legacy within contemporary visual art. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content). Contributors Anthony Abiragi (University of Colorado), Barbara Baert (KU Leuven), Edwin Carels (School of Arts KASK/HoGent/M HKA), Ronnie Close (American University in Cairo), Bart De Baere (M HKA), Stefanie Diekmann (Hildesheim University), Carles Guerra (Fundació Antoni Tàpies), Clara Masnatta (ICI Berlin), W. Ground Sea
Author: Hilde Van Gelder
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 9462702659
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 739
Book Description
Imagine a world in which each individual has a fundamental right to be reborn. This idle dream haunts Hilde Van Gelder’s associative travelogue that takes Allan Sekula’s sequence Deep Six / Passer au bleu (1996/1998) as a touchstone for a dialogue with more recent artworks zooming in on the borderscape near the Channel Tunnel, such as those by Sylvain George and Bruno Serralongue. Combining ethnography, visual materials, political philosophy, cultural geography, and critical analysis, Ground Sea proceeds through an innovative methodological approach. Inspired by the meandering writings of W.G. Sebald, Javier Marías, and Roland Barthes, Van Gelder develops a style both interdisciplinary and personal. Resolutely opting for an aquatic perspective, Ground Sea offers a powerful meditation on the indifference of an increasingly divided European Union with regard to considerable numbers of persons on the move, who find themselves stranded close to Calais. The contested Strait of Dover becomes a microcosm where our present global challenges of migration, climate change, human rights, and neoliberal surveillance technology converge. The Terrorist Image
Author: Charlie Winter
Publisher: Hurst Publishers
ISBN: 1787388557
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 261
Book Description
The summer of 2014–when the Islamic State seized Mosul, Iraq’s second city; captured vast swathes of eastern Syria; and declared itself a latter-day Caliphate–marked a turning point in the history of photography, one that pushed its already contested relationship with reality to its very limits. Uniquely obsessed with narrative, image management and branding, the Islamic State used cameras as weapons in its formative years as a Caliphate. The tens of thousands of propaganda photographs captured during this time were used to denote policy, to navigate through defeat and, perhaps most importantly, to construct an impossible reality: a totalising image-world of Salafi-Jihadist symbols and myths. Based on a deep examination of the 20,000 photographs Charlie Winter collected from the Islamic State’s covert networks online in 2017, this book explores the process by which the Caliphate shook the foundations of modern war photography. Focusing on the period in which it was at its strongest, Winter identifies the implicit value systems that underpinned the Caliphate’s ideological appeal, and evaluates its uniquely malign contribution to the history of the photographic image. The Terrorist Image travels to the heart of what made the Islamic State tick during its prime, providing unique insights into its global appeal and mobilisation successes.

Ecosublime
Author: Lee Rozelle
Publisher: University of Alabama Press
ISBN: 081731492X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
Explores 19th-century, modern, postmodern, and millennial texts as they portray the changing ecological face of America Lee Rozelle probes the metaphor of environmental catastrophe in American literature of the last 150 years. In each instance, Rozelle finds evidence that the ecosublime--nature experienced as an instance of wonder and fear--profoundly reflects spiritual and political responses to the natural world, America’s increasingly anti-ecological trajectory, and the ascendance of a post-natural landscape. In the 19th century, Rozelle argues, Isabella Bird and Edgar Allan Poe represented the western wilderness as culturally constructed and idealized landscapes. Gardens, forests, and frontiers are conceptual frameworks that either misrepresent or uphold ecological space. Modernists like Nathanael West and William Carlos Williams, on the other hand, portray urban space as either wastelands or mythical urban gardens. A chapter on Charles W. Chesnutt and Rebecca Harding Davis analyzes a new breed of literary eco-advocate, educating and shocking mainstream readers through depictions of ecological disaster. A later chapter probes the writings of Edward Abbey and the Unabomber Manifesto to delve into the sublime dimensions of environmental activism, monkey-wrenching, and eco-terrorism.

Intelligent Assembly and Disassembly 2001
Author: Peter Kopacek
Publisher: Pergamon
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 156
Book Description
Rapid development observed in modern production systems is firmly connected with the development of new assembly and disassembly systems. One of the oldest forms of industrial production, assembly, and its twin area disassembly, have both enjoyed tremendous modernisation in the era of the Information Revolution. New enabling technologies, including prominent examples such as virtual CAD, Design for Assembly and Disassembly (DFAD), Robotic and Intelligent Assembly and Flexible Assembly (FA) are now becoming commonplace. This volume presents the papers from the 2nd IFAC Workshop on 'Intelligent Assembly and Disassembly - IAD 2001'. The colloquium highlighted the issues of IAD, showed the actual results of the research and development work, set the direction of future development, and analysed the possibility of introducing IAD into production processes. Including 3 invited papers, and 17 technical papers authored by researchers from across the globe, the papers cover important fields of product development such as product design, development of planning systems, simulation and modelling, as well as sessions on e-manufacturing and education.
