Book Description
The human eye has the capability of seeing individual rays of light, but it is the human brain that has the capability of perceiving individuals, automobiles, buildings, and everything else that constitutes the world. A camera may be able to pick up on separate beams of light, but a computer has the ability to differentiate between each individual color dot. The frustrating disparity that exists between the visual perceptions of humans and computers has been a source of ongoing annoyance for those who work in the field of computer vision for a significant amount of time. Those who work in this field have been forced to deal with this issue for a significant amount of time. How is it that something as simple as a collection of dots of varying colors can become something as complex as a steaming mug of coffee? How are we going to teach computers to identify and organize all of the many sorts of things that they come across? It is immediately obvious that a single colored dot transmits relatively little information about the broader entity to which it belongs when one gives this subject any consideration at all. This understanding comes to one very immediately after beginning to reflect on the topic in question. It is not possible to identify a cheetah based solely on a single black dot; rather, a larger section of the visual field is required in order to recognize the distinct recurrent patches of black on golden fur that are characteristic of this species. If you have a larger visual field, you will be able to recognize a cheetah. This results in the difficult problem of choosing which feature of a picture has to be focused on in order to guarantee that an item can be recognized correctly. The answer to this question is obviously the pixels that make up the item; it should go without saying that this is the case. Unhappily, things may take on a confusing number of forms, and even a single item, like our cheetah, can significantly alter the way it looks from different viewpoints. This is one of the things that makes the world a fascinating and unpredictable place. This is only one example of the numerous terrible things that happen in the real world.

For years, Image Processing has been the foundational text for the study of digital image processing. The book is suited for students at the college senior and first-year graduate level with prior background in mathematical analysis, vectors, matrices, probability, statistics, linear systems, and computer programming. As in all earlier editions, the focus of this edition of the book is on fundamentals. The 4th Edition is based on an extensive survey of faculty, students, and independent readers in 5 institutions from 3 countries. Their feedback led to expanded or new coverage of topics such as deep learning and deep neural networks, including convolutional neural nets, the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), MERS, graph cuts, k-means clustering and superpiels, active contours (snakes and level sets), and each histogram matching. Major improvements were made in reorganising the material on image transforms into a more cohesive presentation, and in the discussion of spatial kernels and spatial filtering. Major revisions and additions were made to examples and homework exercises throughout the book.

Book Description
UP-TO-DATE, TECHNICALLY ACCURATE COVERAGE OF ESSENTIAL TOPICS IN IMAGE AND VIDEO PROCESSING This is the first book to combine image and video processing with a practical MATLAB®-oriented approach in order to demonstrate the most important image and video techniques and algorithms. Utilizing minimal math, the contents are presented in a clear, objective manner, emphasizing and encouraging experimentation. The book has been organized into two parts. Part I: Image Processing begins with an overview of the field, then introduces the fundamental concepts, notation, and terminology associated with image representation and basic image processing operations. Next, it discusses MATLAB® and its Image Processing Toolbox with the start of a series of chapters with hands-on activities and step-by-step tutorials. These chapters cover image acquisition and digitization; arithmetic, logic, and geometric operations; point-based, histogram-based, and neighborhood-based image enhancement techniques; the Fourier Transform and relevant frequency-domain image filtering techniques; image restoration; mathematical morphology; edge detection techniques; image segmentation; image compression and coding; and feature extraction and representation. Part II: Video Processing presents the main concepts and terminology associated with analog video signals and systems, as well as digital video formats and standards. It then describes the technically involved problem of standards conversion, discusses motion estimation and compensation techniques, shows how video sequences can be filtered, and concludes with an example of a solution to object detection and tracking in video sequences using MATLAB®. Extra features of this book include: More than 30 MATLAB® tutorials, which consist of step-by-step guides toexploring image and video processing techniques using MATLAB® Chapters supported by figures, examples, illustrative problems, and exercises Useful websites and an extensive list of bibliographical references This accessible text is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in digital image and video processing courses, as well as for engineers, researchers, software developers, practitioners, and anyone who wishes to learn about these increasingly popular topics on their own.

Book Description
This is an introductory to intermediate level text on the science of image processing, which employs the Matlab programming language to illustrate some of the elementary, key concepts in modern image processing and pattern recognition. The approach taken is essentially practical and the book offers a framework within which the concepts can be understood by a series of well chosen examples, exercises and computer experiments, drawing on specific examples from within science, medicine and engineering. Clearly divided into eleven distinct chapters, the book begins with a fast-start introduction to image processing to enhance the accessibility of later topics. Subsequent chapters offer increasingly advanced discussion of topics involving more challenging concepts, with the final chapter looking at the application of automated image classification (with Matlab examples) . Matlab is frequently used in the book as a tool for demonstrations, conducting experiments and for solving problems, as it is both ideally suited to this role and is widely available. Prior experience of Matlab is not required and those without access to Matlab can still benefit from the independent presentation of topics and numerous examples. Features a companion website www.wiley.com/go/solomon/fundamentals containing a Matlab fast-start primer, further exercises, examples, instructor resources and accessibility to all files corresponding to the examples and exercises within the book itself. Includes numerous examples, graded exercises and computer experiments to support both students and instructors alike.

Book Description
This book develops the mathematical foundation of modern image processing and low-level computer vision, bridging contemporary mathematics with state-of-the-art methodologies in modern image processing, whilst organizing contemporary literature into a coherent and logical structure. The authors have integrated the diversity of modern image processing approaches by revealing the few common threads that connect them to Fourier and spectral analysis, the machinery that image processing has been traditionally built on. The text is systematic and well organized: the geometric, functional, and atomic structures of images are investigated, before moving to a rigorous development and analysis of several image processors. The book is comprehensive and integrative, covering the four most powerful classes of mathematical tools in contemporary image analysis and processing while exploring their intrinsic connections and integration. The material is balanced in theory and computation, following a solid theoretical analysis of model building and performance with computational implementation and numerical examples.

Book Description
Computer Vision and Image Processing contains review papers from the Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing volume covering a large variety of vision-related topics. Organized into five parts encompassing 26 chapters, the book covers topics on image-level operations and architectures; image representation and recognition; and three-dimensional imaging. The introductory part of this book is concerned with the end-to-end performance of image gathering and processing for high-resolution edge detection. It proposes methods using mathematical morphology to provide a complete edge detection process that may be used with any slope approximating operator. This part also discusses the automatic control of low-level robot vision, presents an image partitioning method suited for parallel implementation, and describes invariant architectures for low-level vision. The subsequent two sections present significant topics on image representation and recognition. Topics covered include the use of the primitives chain code; the geometric properties of the generalized cone; efficient rendering and structural-statistical character recognition algorithms; multi-level thresholding for image segmentation; knowledge-based object recognition system; and shape decomposition method based on perceptual structure. The fourth part describes a rule-based expert system for recovering three-dimensional shape and orientation. A procedure of intensity-guided range sensing to gain insights on the concept of cooperative-and-iterative strategy is also presented in this part. The concluding part contains supplementary texts on texture segmentation using topographic labels and an improved algorithm for labeling connected components in a binary image. Additional algorithms for three-dimensional motion parameter determination and surface tracking in three-dimensional binary images are also provided.
