Book Description
This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Unsteady Combustion", which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by "Combusting Flow Diagnostics" conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for "steady" combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance. The volume is divided into three parts devoted to the subjects of combustion-induced oscillations; combustion in internal combustion engines; and experimental techniques and modelling.

Book Description
Two problems concerning diffusion flames characterized by a coordinate-dependent Damkohler number were studied theoretically, namely the structure of diffusion flames in laminar boundary layers and the one-dimensional unsteady ignition of solid fuels. The model selected for the study of the structure of diffusion flames in laminar boundary layers consists of an oxidant-containing flow over a wedge of condensed fuel. The fuel was assumed to undergo equilibrium vaporization and the chemical reaction was represented by Arrhenius kinetics of arbitrary order. The near-equilibrium regime was analyzed by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The model for the study of the unsteady ignition of solid fuels consisted of a solid fuel suddenly exposed to hot oxidizing gas. The chemical reaction was represented by second-order Arrhenius kinetics. (Modified author abstract).

Book Description
An experimental apparatus for the examination of a planar, virtually strain-rate-free diffusion flame in microgravity has been designed and fabricated. Such a diffusion flame is characterized by relatively large spatial scale and high symmetry (to facilitate probing), and by relatively long fluid-residence time (to facilitate investigation of rates associated with sooting phenomena). Within the squat rectangular apparatus, with impervious, noncatalytic isothermal walls of stainless steel, a thin metallic splitter plate subdivides the contents into half-volumes. One half-volume initially contains fuel vapor diluted with an inert gas, and the other, oxidizer diluted with another inert gas-so that the two domains have equal pressure, density, and temperature. As the separator is removed, by translation in its own plane, through a tightly fitting slit in one side wall, a line ignitor in the opposite side wall initiates a triple-flame propagation across the narrow layer of combustible mixture formed near midheight in the chamber. The planar diffusion flame so emplaced is quickly disrupted in earth gravity. In microgravity, the planar flame persists, and travels ultimately into the half-volume containing the stoichiometrically deficient reactant; the flame eventually becomes extinguished owing to reactant depletion and heat loss to the walls.Fendell, Francis and Rungaldier, HaraldGlenn Research CenterFLAME PROPAGATION; COMBUSTION; DIFFUSION FLAMES; MICROGRAVITY; THIN PLATES; BURNOUT; DEPLETION; STAINLESS STEELS; SYMMETRY; STRAIN RATE; IGNITION

Book Description
The goal of the proposed research work is to gain insight into the dependence of formation of NOx (i.e. NO and NO2) on unsteady flame dynamics and thermal diffusive (i.e. Lewis number) effects in diffusion flames. The coupled effect of fuel Lewis number and flow unsteadiness will be systematically investigated and implications for fully turbulent flow will be revealed. Acoustically pulsed laminar jet diffusion flames will be studied. The effect of a wide range of fuel Lewis numbers will be investigated; flame temperature and NOx emission will be measured using Thin Filament Pyrometry (TFP) and NOx chemiluminescence analysis.

Book Description
Developing clean, sustainable energy systems is a pre-eminent issue of our time. Most projections indicate that combustion-based energy conversion systems will continue to be the predominant approach for the majority of our energy usage. Unsteady combustor issues present the key challenge associated with the development of clean, high-efficiency combustion systems such as those used for power generation, heating or propulsion applications. This comprehensive study is unique, treating the subject in a systematic manner. Although this book focuses on unsteady combusting flows, it places particular emphasis on the system dynamics that occur at the intersection of the combustion, fluid mechanics and acoustic disciplines. Individuals with a background in fluid mechanics and combustion will find this book to be an incomparable study that synthesises these fields into a coherent understanding of the intrinsically unsteady processes in combustors.
