Book Description
In his latest book, Horizons of Difference: Engaging with Others, Fred Dallmayr argues that the dialogue between religious and secular commitments, between faith and reason, is particularly important in our time because both faith and reason can give rise to dangerous and destructive types of extremism, fanaticism, or idolatry. In this interdisciplinary and cross-cultural synthesis of philosophy, religious thought, and political theory, Dallmayr neither accepts the “clash of cultures” dichotomy nor denies the reality of cultural tensions. Instead, operating from the standpoint of philosophical hermeneutics, he embraces cultural difference as a necessary condition and opportunity for mutual cross-cultural dialogue and learning. In part 1, “Relationality and Difference,” Dallmayr explores the emergence of diverse loyalties and attachments in different social and cultural contexts. The assumption is not that different commitments are necessarily synchronized or “naturally” compatible but rather that they are held together precisely by their difference and potential antagonism. Part 2, “Engagement through Dialogue and Interaction,” dwells on the major means of mediating between the alternatives of radical separation and radical sameness: dialogue and hermeneutical interpretation of understanding. In this respect, the emphasis shifts to leading philosophers of dialogue such as Hans-Georg Gadamer, Bernhard Waldenfels, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In a world where the absolutizing of the ego encourages selfish egotism that can lead to aggressive warmongering, Horizons of Difference shows how the categories of “difference” and “relationality” can be used to build a genuine and peaceful democracy based on dialogue and interaction instead of radical autonomy and elitism.

Book Description
Professor Yang Guorong is one of the foremost living philosophers in China, and is widely known for the development of his “concrete metaphysics.” In Philosophical Horizons Yang offers penetrating discussions of some of the most important issues in modern philosophy—especially those topics related to comparative and Chinese philosophy. Drawing freely and adroitly on Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist texts, while staging a dialogue with Western thinkers such as from Kant and Hegel to Marx, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein, Yang shows how contemporary Chinese philosophy has adopted, localized, and critically developed Western ideas alongside traditional Chinese concepts.

Book Description
The translator is one of the key elements in the practice of translation. However, the roles of the translator have long been overlooked and even denied in the history of translation studies, which has led to the invisibility of the translator. The reasons for the invisibility of the translator have been investigated in this book. With the emergence of new thoughts in philosophy, cultural studies, cognitive science and linguistic theories, changes have occurred in the ideas about the roles of the translator and resulted in the visibility of the translator and the prominence of the subjectivity of the translator in translation studies. This book explores the changes from two major perspectives. One perspective is from structuralism and the objective standards applied in natural science and social sciences related to the translator’s invisibility. The other perspective is from hermeneutics, phenomenology, existentialism, the theory of power and discourse, embodied philosophy, relevance theory, and cognitive linguistics, all of which explain the subjectivity of the translator and support the viewpoint that the translator is active, rather than passive, in translation activities, and hence the visibility of the translator in translation studies.

Book Description
China contributes a large part to rice production, one of the most important crops in the world. It is estimated that in China rice constitutes about half of the total food production, covering an area of about 30 % of \08 hectares of cultivated land of the whole country. Owing to the peculiar water regime, paddy soils possess quite different properties physically, chemically and biologically as compared with those of upland soils. Such properties have a conspicuous effect on fertility and management practice of paddy field. For the purpose of summing up the past work and opening up new prospects, a "Symposium on Paddy Soils" was organized under the auspices of Academia Sinica, held on October 19-24, 1980 in Nanjing, which was followed by a seven-day paddy soil excursion in the lower Changjiang Delta. In addition to 120 Chinese soil scientists, 56 guests coming from America, Asia, Europe and Oceania attended the symposium on invitation. A total of 110 papers were presented either orally or by poster. All these are collected and published in the present proceedings which we hope may be helpful to the scientific exchanges between soil scientists of China and other countries.
