Book Description
Diatom biology, genomics and ecology are becoming more relevant to the human species. While there have been recent compilations of some of the applied aspects of diatoms, and the dizzying pace of taxonomic revisions, this new volume bring us up to date on their classification, biology and ecology, as well as covering the topics of genomics and applied uses. In this collection, some of the leaders in diatom research present either new information or summarize recent research efforts on a wide range of topics, including the tree of life of diatoms, their classifications, the wide habitats and ecological spectra the group exploits, as well as the beauty of their form. This volume celebrates the diversity, emerging areas of research and fascinating ecology of the diatoms bringing this group of world-renown and emerging research leaders together. 'The Diatom World' will foster greater appreciation and research contributions on this incredibly diverse and fascinating group of organisms.

Book Description
The twenty-nine peer-reviewed contributions to this impressive volume sweep the entire range of current research on diatoms - from the taxonomy of freshwater and marine diatoms, the fossil record of both terrestrial and marine habitats, planktonic diatoms, potential of diatoms and ostracods as bioindicators, application of diatom assemblages to climatic reconstructions, the use of molecular tools in phylogeny, tracing the threat of invasive and potentially toxic diatoms to the highlights of the diatom collection of Józef Pantocsek. The wide range of topics covered herein delineates the equally wide range of research interests of Prof. Horst Lange-Bertalot. The papers were contributed by friends and colleagues on the occasion of his 75th birthday which was celebrated during the 5th Central European Diatomologists Meeting (=25th German-speaking Diatomologists Meeting) in Szczecin, Poland, in February 2011. Many of the authors have benefited from Prof. Lange-Bertalot´s profound knowledge of diatoms in general, and his floristic skills in particular. The impact of his work on diatom research has been extraordinary, with important implications for ecology (from water pollution to climate change), biodiversity and conservation sciences. This has been due in large part to the breadth and depth of Prof. Lange-Bertalot_s research record in four areas: evaluation of water quality using diatoms, floristics with a focus on Europe, floristics with a worldwide perspective, and synthetic work to organize and integrate these other studies. This tremendous volume honors Professor Horst Lange-Bertalot, one of the pre-eminent diatom taxonomists. This volume is of great interest for all researchers working on diatoms and their impact on biodiversity, conservation sciences and ecology in general.

Book Description
Readers of this Beiheft of Nova Hedwigia will find articles on a large variety of diatoms, from fossil to recent, marine to freshwater, established species and genera to new ones. Fifty-two authors have contributed to this volume by their diversity of interests. Topics range from morphology, taxonomy, ecology and distribution of diatoms found all over the world (from Europe to Russia and Asia, from the entire American Continent and even the Antarctica) and from past to recent. The variety of the papers presented in this volume reflects the diversity of scientific interests of Nina Strelnikova, to whom this Beiheft is dedicated. This volume is of interest for every scientist working on diatoms and interested in the variety of diatom research. It should not be missing in any library.

Book Description
High-resolution images of phytoplankton cells such as diatoms or desmids, which are useful for monitoring water quality, can now be provided by digital microscopes, facilitating the automated analysis and identification of specimens. Conventional approaches are based on optical microscopy; however, manual image analysis is impractical due to the huge diversity of this group of microalgae and its great morphological plasticity. As such, there is a need for automated recognition techniques for diagnostic tools (e.g. environmental monitoring networks, early warning systems) to improve the management of water resources and decision-making processes. Describing the entire workflow of a bioindicator system, from capture, analysis and identification to the determination of quality indices, this book provides insights into the current state-of-the-art in automatic identification systems in microscopy.

Book Description
This Beiheft of Nova Hedwigia features twenty contributions by more than 40 authors, representing the entire range of Prof. Le Cohu's work and interests. Topics of the contributions range from purely taxonomic papers to articles dealing with diatom biodiversity, ecology, paleoecology and biogeography. The papers apply both traditional and novel techniques. They describe more than 20 new species (high quality SEM images) and three new genera and several taxa are revised. Geographically, the contributions to this volume span a a wide region, from the part of France, where Ren le Cohu started his research, to the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands from where he has described a great number of species. This Beiheft is dedicated to Prof. Dr. Ren Le Cohu on the occasion of his 80th birthday, in recognition of his life-long scientific work on the taxonomy and ecology of algae, and diatoms in particular. It addresses phycologists and other researchers working on diatoms and algae.

Book Description
Diatoms are the most species rich group of algae, and they contribute about 20% of annual global carbon fixation. They play major roles in ocean food webs and global biogeochemical cycles. They are also a target of the biotechnology industry because of their nano-patterned silica cell wall and high lipid content. Diatoms have received increasing attention as more genomes became available and because of the development of genome editing tools such as the CRISPR/Cas9 technology, which has made diatoms as genetically tractable as well-established biological model species. This book provides an overview on diatom molecular biology. It brings together international leading experts in the field to discuss the latest data and developments from genes to ecosystems. As the understanding of diatoms is currently experiencing a step change, it is critical to allow for synergistic approaches on diverse aspects of diatom biology and evolution. The books offers fundamental insights into the molecular life of diatoms; at the same time new scientific concepts are developed based on the application of the latest molecular tools and genomic information to explore the fascinating lifestyle of diatoms.

Book Description
The Sixth Symposium on Recent and Fossil Diatoms was held in Budapest, 1-5 September 1980, and was arranged by the Hungarian Geological Society. During four days of the meeting 71 papers were presented covering almost the whole gamut of topics with which research on diatoms deals. 32 of these papers are included in this volume which contains those devoted to taxonomy, morphology, ecology and biology. They include a few that are concerned with fossil diatoms, but the papers on stratigraphy and paleoecology are appearing in a special number of Acta Geologica Hungaria.
