Gunnison, was to proceed along the 38th parallel, on a line marking the nearest route between San Francisco and San Louis and the navigable waters of the Mississippi, and in its prolonga tion dividing the territory of the United States into two nearly equal parts. Finally, the third, headed by Lieut. Whipple, was to follow the 35th parallel N. L., in order that in the poorly watered prairies to the east, and the desolate wastes to the west of the Rocky Mountains, they might take advantage of the tributary streams of the Mississippi, the Rio Grande, and the great Colorado of the west.
