Book Description
Excerpt from The Dialogue in English Literature The general history of the dialogue has been set forth in Hirzel's Der Dialog, ein Literarhistorischer Versuch (Leipsic, 1895), which includes, in addition to a full account of classic dialogues, some brief mention of those in modern literatures. This book has furnished the starting-point for the following discussion, which aims to deal, rather inclusively, with the varieties of dialogue in our literature, as well as to give an account of the English dialogues that are most typical, or of the greatest value artistically. I have grouped these dialogues in certain general classes, after setting aside for separate treatment the mediaeval period and the nineteenth century; for, though the classes do indeed overlap, such a grouping reveals some important tendencies. A few translations that have come to form part of English literature, or have closely affected its development, appear in the course of the discussion, but only a few out of many. The following pages may perhaps suggest that, though English literature has produced no dialogues of such permanent beauty and importance as those which have come to us from the Greeks, and though English dialogues, in general, have been far less dramatic and far more expository in tone than the best of those in classic literature, they have been more numerous and of greater interest than is generally realized. Book Description
Excerpt from Dialogues of the Dead Sometimes a new dress may render an old truth more pleasing to those whom the mere love of novelty betrays into error, as it frequently does not only the wits, but the sages of these days. Indeed, one of the best services that could now be done to mankind by any good writer would be the bringing them back to common sense, from which the desire of shining by extraordinary, notions has seduced great numbers, to the no small detriment of morality and of all real knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from Minor Dialogues: Together With the Dialogue on Clemency By providence, so many evils befall good men? The answer to this would be more conveniently given in the course of this work, after we have proved that providence governs the universe, and that God is amongst us but, Since you wish me to deal with one point apart from the whole, and to answer one replication before the main action has been decided, I will do what is not difficult, and plead the cause of the gods. At the present time it is superfluous to point out that it is not without some guardian that so great a work maintains its position, that the assemblage and movements of the stars do not depend upon accidental impulses, or that objects whose motion is regulated by chance often fall into confusion and soon stumble, whereas this swift and safe movement goes on, governed by eternal law, bearing with it so many things both on sea and land, so many most brilliant lights shining in order in the skies; that this regularity does not belong to matter moving at random, and that particles brought together by chance could not.
