Book Description
The experiments described in this report are intended to provide a detailed picture of the flow pattern inside a MAST when the initial magnetic field is in the axial direc tion. The experimental program was set up to provide answers to these two questions which had not been considered in detail before. First, do either of the two existing theoretical models considered predict an accurate over-all momentum balance for the device over a wide range of experimental conditions with an initial axial magnetic field. Second, what is the detailed flow pattern inside the device over a range of axial magnetic fields, and is either of the models considered a reasonable approximation to the observed flow pattern. It was hoped that evidence would be obtained to indicate that the shock separated from the current sheet, as one of the aims of the project was to develop a device that would produce a gas sample whose properties could be calculated. Of particular interest here was the switch-on shock wave, and it was hoped that the existence of such a shock could be demonstrated. When no evidence of a homogeneous gas sample was obtained, the current-sheet behavior was studied in an attempt to understand why the expected separation did not occur.

An Electromagnetic Shock Tube for Aerodynamic Research
Author: Richard W. Ziemer
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electromagnetic waves
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
An electromagnetically driven shock tube was studied as a possible new tool for aerodynamic research in which velocities of up to 41,000 feet per second are obtainable in air. At these high velocities stagnation temperatures of about 35,000K are produced. The simple construction and operation of the shock tube is described and an evaluation is made of its performance. The potentialities and limitations of the apparatus are discussed with regards to research applications. The results of some magnetoaerodynamic studies are presented to show the usefulness of this type of shock tube. (Author).

On the Magnetically Driven T-type Shock Tube of Rectangular Geometry
Author: Leonard Y. Cooper
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Hydrogen
Languages : en
Pages : 49
Book Description
The principle of operation of the T-type shock tube is discussed in general. A mathematical model of a shock tube of rectangular geometry is proposed, and a theory of performance is developed for this model. A shock tube is constructed so as to produce phenomena which will correlate to the above model. Experiments are performed on the shock tube using hydrogen as the test gas, and the results are compared with theoretical predictions based on the mathematical model. Excellent agreement of the experiments and theory is obtained for low shock velocities. The assumed nature of the current flow in the shock tAuthor).
