Book Description
Varied and deliberately diverse, this group of essays provides a reassessment of the life and work of the popular nineteenth-century artist Samuel Palmer. While scholarly publications have been published recently which reassess Palmer's achievement, those works primarily consider the artist in isolation. This volume examines his work in relation to a wider art world and analyses areas of his life and output that have until now received little attention, reinstating the study of Palmer's work within broader debates about landscape and cultural history. In Samuel Palmer Revisited, the contributors provide a fresh perspective on Palmer's work, its context and its influence.

By revisiting the deserted villages, this breakthrough study addresses questions that have plagued archaeologists, geographers, and historians since the 1940s--including why they were deserted, why some villages survived while others were abandoned, and who was responsible for their desertion--offering a series of exciting insights into the fate of these fascinating sites.

Book Description
Sheds light on the history of East Devon's churches from the Middle Ages onwards, illustrating the ways in which parish churches were transformed in the late nineteenth century. In the mid nineteenth century the Devon antiquarian James Davidson visited all of East Devon's churches and made detailed notes about their buildings, fabric and fittings. His notes are an eyewitness record of the state of these parish churches at the time before changes in liturgy and fashion in the later Victorian period brought about irreplaceable change. Davidson's descriptions highlight what has been lost from the archaeological record and allow us to make comparisons with the churches today. In this way they shed light on the history of East Devon's churches from the Middle Ages onwards and illustrate the ways in which parish churches were transformed in the late nineteenth century. Davidson's records of memorials and inscriptions in the churches also provide rich and fascinating material for research into local history, social history and family history from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries and illustrate changing attitudes to death and commemoration.istory and family history from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries and illustrate changing attitudes to death and commemoration.istory and family history from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries and illustrate changing attitudes to death and commemoration.istory and family history from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries and illustrate changing attitudes to death and commemoration.

Book Description
Excerpt from North Devon Churches: Studies of Some of the Ancient Buildings The work of preparing this book has extended, at intervals, over a period of two years, during which I have visited each church, and have studied, measured, and sketched the structures, their towers and most interesting features. No photographs have been taken, except the four forming the frontispiece. For head and tail pieces I have used sketches made by me on former home and foreign travels. The lists of vicars, etc., have been obtained, in some cases, direct from the present incumbents; and in others, from the lists hung up in the buildings, or from the sources named in the letterpress. Where no lists are given, the churches do not possess them, as the manuscripts have been lost or destroyed. I desire to express my thanks to Mr. Thomas Wainwright, of the Barnstaple Athenaeum, for giving me access to several books containing historical references bearing on some of the churches and also for information about several prominent persons of old times, who were associated with some of the parishes and churches; to the Rev. Frank N esbitt, vicar of Buckfastleigh, 8. Devon, and formerly Curate of Ilfracombe Parish Church, for a sketch of the cross (now obliterated) on the ancient tombstone referred to in the Appendix; to Mr. J. A. J. De Villiers of the British Museum, for his translation of the inscription on the Braunton chest to the clergy and sextons, who have given me many valuable bits of information to residents in several of the parishes, whose reminiscences have been found useful and last, but not least, to the many friends who have come forward as Subscribers to the book.
