This report examines the role of rare earth metals and other materials in the clean energy economy. It was prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) based on data collected and research performed during 2010. In respone to the United States President's endorsement of research and development on critical and strategic materials (CSM), the Navy has initiated a program to develop design options for CSM in future weapon and platform systems. Key objectives of the program are: development of a data base, fabrication of materials and components, demonstration of hardware, and establishment of manufacturing process to provide reproducible materials and components. Four materials thrusts art addressed. They are: utilization of domestically abundant materials, development of domestic high temperature materials, evaluation of new materials and alloys, and conservation of critical materials.
