Book Description
Bacterial oxidation processes involve the promotion of the catalytic activities of iron-sulphur oxidizing bacteria for the oxidation of sulphide minerals by oxygen under moderate conditions of temperature and ambient pressure. It follows that production of bacterial cells and the growth rate of bacterial cells will be important process parameters, together with the relationships for sulphide oxidation and gold recovery. Feeds for bacterial oxidation can range from low-sulphur flotation concentrates, or even milled run-of-mine ore, to higher-sulphur flotation concentrates that would normally be prepared for roasting. The ability to treat low-sulphur concentrate or ore can potentially improve the overall gold recoveries and reduce costs, but the larger masses to be treated may lead to larger reactors. This can be offset to some extent by increasing the feed pulp solids concentration. Fine milling of the feed to bacterial oxidation can result in significant increases in oxidation rates as well as improving gold recoveries, but will represent an additional cost. The low-temperature bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and related types of bacteria have normally been used in bacterial oxidation processes. However, thermophilic bacteria such as Sulpholobus with optimum temperatures from 60 to 85 degrees C can be considered and comparative evaluations are needed. The foregoing process options and parameters can be studied in laboratory-scale amenability and pilot plant testing. Some examples of experimental data are described and discussed.

Book Description
This book review series presents current trends in modern biotechnology. The aim is to cover all aspects of this interdisciplinary technology where knowledge, methods and expertise are required from chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, chemical engineering and computer science. Volumes are organized topically and provide a comprehensive discussion of developments in the respective field over the past 3-5 years. The series also discusses new discoveries and applications. Special volumes are dedicated to selected topics which focus on new biotechnological products and new processes for their synthesis and purification. In general, special volumes are edited by well-known guest editors. The series editor and publisher will however always be pleased to receive suggestions and supplementary information. Manuscripts are accepted in English.

Author: Rajesh Arora
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 9781845939571
Category : Biomass energy
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
This book focuses on two key issues confronting humanity, viz., energy and environment. There is a need to devise strategies for protecting the environment, at the same time adequately meeting the ever-growing energy needs of the world. Harnessing the power of microbes is one step towards finding cheap, green and sustainable solutions to the problems of energy and environment. The book is divided into eight major topics. These topics include emerging trends in microbial biotechnology, harnessing sustainable energy sources from microorganisms, mechanistics of bioenergy production, bioenergy from wastes and pollutant removal, microalgae for biofuels, bioremediation technologies for petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and xenobiotics, bioremediation of nuclear wastes, and the role of extremophilic microorganisms in environmental cleanup.
