Excerpt from Deutsche Grammatik, Vol. 1: Gotisch, Alt-Mittel-und Neuhochdeutsch; Lautlehre Neben diesen Werken und durch sie gefordert gestaltete sich allmählich meine Arbeit. Der erste, jetzt vorliegende Teil war im wesentlichen schon vor vier bis fünf Jahren abgeschlossen. Ich verschob es, die letzte Hand anzulegen und ihn druck fertig zu machen, weil ich erst das übrige weiter fördern und womöglich das Ganze in ununterbrochener Folge wollte er scheinen lassen. Aber ich kam zu der Überzeugung, dass ich auf diese Weise vielleicht nie fertig werden würde, ich musste einen Teil abstossen, um ungestört an der Fortsetzung arbeiten zu können. Den Aufschub bedauere ich gleichwohl nicht; denn die Beiträge Kluges und Behaghels zu Pauls Grundriss der germanischen Philologie sind mir noch sehr zu statten gekommen. Im September des vorigen Jahres habe ich das Ms. Abgeschlossen; einige später erschienene Abhandlungen haben, wenigstens in den beiden ersten Lieferungen, noch bei der Korrektur Erwähnung gefunden. Ob nun neben den Arbeiten, die ich benutzt habe, uber haupt noch ein Bedürfnis nach meinem Buch vorhanden ist, werden andere beurteilen. Ich selbst weiss, dass ich meinen Vorgängern das Beste verdanke, und dass die, welche die grammatische Forschung der letzten zwanzig Jahre verfolgt haben, kaum etwas finden werden, das sie nicht wüssten; aber vielleicht wird auch diesen die Zusammenstellung brauchbar sein. Einen guten Dienst hoffe ich den Jüngeren, die sich mit den Ergebnissen der historischen Grammatik bekannt machen wollen, geleistet zu haben.
