Book Description
[ANGLÈS] Smart cities have been recently pointed out by experts an emerging market with enormous potential, which is expected to drive the digital economy forward in the coming years. Nowadays, cities hold half of the global population, consume 75% of the world́s energy resources and emit 80% of the carbon that is harming the environment. Making a city "smart" is emerging as a strategy to mitigate the problems generated by the urban population growth and rapid urbanization. In that way, by using technology, cities can be built to be more efficient and sustainable, decreasing carbon emissions and improving the quality of life of its citizens. These smart cities are plenty of a big variety of heterogeneous devices and sensor networks that sense the urban environment and generate big amounts of data to be processed for developing smart services. Thus, the implementation of an Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) infrastructure is fundamental to a smart citýs development. With this aim, this project studies the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) that prove to be a good solution for the infrastructures deployed on smart cities; it also designs and proposes an architecture for smart cities that allows the development of smart services that exploit the data generated by the sensor networks. Finally, a smart lighting service, which allows automatic adaptability of luminous intensity and relies on a real infrastructure deployed in Santandeŕs city, is developed. To this end, a prototype is set up and developed; the core component of this prototype is a Data Collection and Analysis platform that exposes the data generated by the sensor networks to the smart lighting service.

Book Description
The rapid growth of IoT and its applications in smart cities pose significant challenges for academic scholars. The increasing number of interconnected devices and the massive amounts of data they generate strain traditional networks, leading to inefficiencies and security vulnerabilities. Additionally, the centralized control plane in Software Defined Networks (SDN) presents a single point of failure, hindering network performance, while IoT devices themselves are susceptible to attacks, compromising user data and privacy. To address these pressing issues, Network-Enabled IoT Applications for Smart City Services offers a compelling solution. Edited by Dr. K. Hemant Kumar Reddy, Dr. Diptendu SinhaRoy, and Tapas Mishra, this book advocates leveraging SDN to handle high-frequency data streams effectively. It also proposes the integration of blockchain technology to enhance security and reliability in IoT applications, offering a roadmap for scholars to improve network efficiency, security, and reliability in IoT and smart city domains. With their extensive expertise, the authors provide academic scholars with a comprehensive and innovative resource that inspires further research and development in this evolving field, enabling them to make significant contributions to the advancement of IoT and smart city technologies.
