Book Description
Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Volume 19: Stabilized Earth Roads surveys soil stabilization theory and practice. This work is divided into nine chapters that discuss the physical, chemical, and soil mechanics principles of soil stabilization. The first chapter is an introduction to the history, methods, and importance of soil stabilization in road construction. The next chapters deal with the fundamental definitions of soil physics and the interactions of soil components, as well as the concept of mechanical soil stabilization. Considerable chapters examine soil stabilization with several materials, such as cement, lime, bitumen, and tar. The last chapters describe the soil-stabilization methods with various chemicals, including chlorides, phosphoric acid, and natural and synthetic polymers. These chapters also consider the design of stabilized earth roads. This book is of value to geologists and civil engineers.

Book Description
The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Description
This manual establishes criteria for improving the engineering properties of soils used for pavement base courses, subbase courses, and subgrades by the use of additives which are mixed into the soil to effect the desired improvement. These criteria are also applicable to roads and airfields having a stabilized surface layer. This manual prescribes the appropriate type or types of additive to be used with different soil types, procedures for determining a design treatment level for each type of additive, and recommended construction practices for incorporating the additive into the soil.

Book Description
The objective of this study was to develop a design system for the use of chemically stabilized soil layers in pavement systems in the theater of operations. Stabilization with only portland cement, lime, and bituminous materials was considered. Two concepts of construction were envisioned in the development of this system: Expedient and nonexpedient construction. The former involves that type of construction effort to be used when constraints of time, material, equipment, etc., dictate a minimization of efforts. The latter involves that type of construction to be used when constraints are less severe but construction effort would be less than what would be termed deliberate. Procedures are provided for selection of type and quantity of stabilization based on soil type. Thickness design curves are presented for design of single- and multiple-layer pavements for both roads and airfields. (Author).
