Book Description
This book reconstructs key aspects of the early career of Descartes from 1618 to 1633; that is, up through the point of his composing his first system of natural philosophy, Le Monde, in 1629-33. It focuses upon the overlapping and intertwined development of Descartes’ projects in physico-mathematics, analytical mathematics, universal method, and, finally, systematic corpuscular-mechanical natural philosophy. The concern is not simply with the conceptual and technical aspects of these projects; but, with Descartes’ agendas within them and his construction and presentation of his intellectual identity in relation to them. Descartes’ technical projects, agendas and senses of identity shifted over time, entangled and displayed great successes and deep failures, as he morphed from a mathematically competent, Jesuit trained graduate in neo-Scholastic Aristotelianism to aspiring prophet of a systematised corpuscular-mechanism, passing through stages of being a committed physico-mathematicus, advocate of a putative ‘universal mathematics’, and projector of a grand methodological dream. In all three dimensions—projects, agendas and identity concerns—the young Descartes struggled and contended, with himself and with real or virtual peers and competitors, hence the title ‘Descartes-Agonistes’.

Book Description
"It is not enough to have a good mind; it is more important to use it well" René Descartes was a central figure in the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century. In his Discourse on Method he outlined the contrast between mathematics and experimental sciences, and the extent to which each one can achieve certainty. Drawing on his own work in geometry, optics, astronomy and physiology, Descartes developed the hypothetical method that characterizes modern science, and this soon came to replace the traditional techniques derived from Aristotle. Many of Descartes’ most radical ideas—such as the disparity between our perceptions and the realities that cause them—have been highly influential in the development of modern philosophy. This edition sets the Discourse on Method in the wider context of Descartes’ work, with the Rules for Guiding One’s Intelligence in Searching for the Truth (1628), extracts from The World (1633) and selected letters from 1636-9. A companion volume, Meditations and Other Metaphysical Writings, is also published in Penguin Classics.

Book Description
Descartes was an eighteenth-century mathematician and musician, He believed that all problems could be solved using mathematical logic. In this book which was published in 1701 after his death, he outlines the four main rules: (1) accept nothing as true that is not self-evident, (2) divide problems into their simplest parts, (3) solve problems by proceeding from simple to complex, and (4) recheck the reasoning.

Book Description
The long chains of simple and easy reasonings by means of which geometers are accustomed to reach the conclusions of their most difficult demonstrations, had led me to imagine that all things, the knowledge of which is competent to man, are mutually connected in the same way, and that there is nothing so far removed from us as to be beyond our reach, or so hidden that we cannot discover it, provided only we abstain from accepting the false for the true, and always preserve in our thoughts the order necessary for the deduction of one truth from another. from Part II Sometimes called the father of modern philosophy, French mathematician, scientist, and writer RENE DESCARTES (15961650) continues to have a deeply profound impact on our modern world. His thinking on how the mind works and what is it capable of has profoundly impacted our understanding of ourselveshe summed up his philosophy with the phrase I think, therefore I am, which still thrills usand his influence extends to our own experiments with modern computing and artificial intelligence. This treatise on the value of doubt and skepticism when studying the natural world laid the foundation for the modern scientific method as we still employ it today, as well as the basis for modern philosophy. It is impossible to overstate how vital this work is to the entirety of human culture as it stands in the 21st century. Written in French and first published in 1637 under the full title Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting the Reason, and Seeking Truth in the Sciences, it is here presented in the 1901 edition of the 1850 English translation by Scottish poet, philosopher, and historian JOHN VEITCH (18291894).

Book Description
"A work which puts the chief mathematical and physical discoveries of Descartes in an accessible form, for the benefit of English readers, fills an outstanding gap upon the shelf devoted to the history of philosophy and science. Descartes is universally acknowledged to be the founder of modern mathematics through the invention of analytical geometry, and it was no exaggeration when M. Chasles wrote of him that this single revolutionary step changed the face of mathematics. ... Dr. Scott has given us large tracts of the Géométrie carefully paraphrased, retaining almost all the original notation of Descartes as well as the original and often fascinating diagrams...There is here to be found the considerable contribution that Descartes made to the physical sciences, which involved much accurate work in geometrical optics and its bearing upon the practical problem of fashioning lenses, as also the deeper problems of sight and colour. While the theories and results in these matters had not that instant effect upon natural philosophy comparable to the decisive impact of analytical geometry upon mathematics, they none the less partook of a clarity and accuracy which resembles the optical work of Newton, and there is little room to doubt that they formed an essential prelude to the discoveries not only of Newton, but also of Huygens, Hooke and James Gregory. The careful treatment that Dr. Scott has here accorded to this work of Descartes is welcome. It goes far enough into detail by developing the original argument without attempting to cover the whole range of subjects undertaken by Descartes, such as mechanics, glass-grinding, music, biology: and it is put into a proper perspective in regard to former, present and subsequent discoveries..."--
