La situación actual de los recursos hídricos a nivel mundial es de una acusada disminución de su disponibilidad per cápita motivada por el crecimiento demográfico; la sobreexplotación agrícola y ganadera, necesaria para alimentar dicha población; la expansión de la actividad industrial, con un consumo cada vez mayor de recursos hídricos; el calentamiento global, con una significativa disminución de la superficie de los glaciares y masas de hielo; y los efectos negativos atribuidos al cambio climático, traducidos en una mayor variabilidad espacial y temporal de los fenómenos hídricos, con el incremento de catastróficas inundaciones y pertinaces sequías. All species are illustrated and a distribution map of each is provided. All names are typified and nomenclatural and bibliographic details for all typifications presented. One new species from Ecuador is described. The monograph is the first complete taxonomic treatment of these species since the worldwide monograph of Solanum done by the French botanist Michel-Felix Dunal in 1852.
