C’est ainsi que les découvertes de quelques fossiles odontologiques, singuliers pour l’époque, marquèrent l’histoire de la paléontologie en révélant l’existence d’un fabuleux bestiaire perdu, jusqu’alors totalement ignoré. Enfin, d’autres mâchoires et dents fossiles entrèrent dans la postérité pour des raisons bien différentes. En effet, si certains fossiles induisirent les hommes en erreur, d’autres leur inspirèrent d’ingénieuses impostures ou furent à l’origine de virulents conflits, qui restèrent à jamais gravés dans l’histoire de la paléontologie.

La @paléontologie s’intéresse aux restes fossiles. Les dents et les mandibule sont intéressantes car elles sont fortement fossilisées. L’histoire de nos dents suit l’Histoire de l’Homme. Dans un premier temps, l’auteur rappelle les grandes étapes de l’évolution humaine en fonction de l’échelle des temps géologiques. Puis, nous reprendrons ces grandes étapes en insistant sur l’évolution dentaire. Enfin, nous reviendrons sur les grandes tranformations de chaque groupe de dents permanentes. Nous apprenons que notre formule dentaire est stable depuis 35 millions d’années. Il faut noter une tendance à la réduction des tubercules et à la simplification des schémas occlusaux. Toutes ces modifications sont dûes aux changements alimentaires. Nous pouvons donc supposer que notre dent de sagesse est loin de disparaître.
