Book Description
A recurrent theme that characterizes the work of Dennis Oppenheim (Electric City, Washington, 1938), one of the most unusual and adventurous of contemporary American artists, is the encounter between art and nature. His first work using land, in Oakland, was produced in 1967. From the beginning of the Seventies, his work began to take a wide variety of forms, from performance art to installations, from video to the production, at the end of the decade, of the machine pieces, three-dimensional structures animated by mechanical devices. In 1986, the work of the artist took another turn: his works, enormous imaginary objects, mutant and distorted, are all pervaded by a new violent and playful irony. This book presents Oppenheim's sculptural upside-down church Device to root out evil. Produced for Venice, this glass and aluminum sculpture, 12 metres high, 6 metres long, and 4 metres deep, balances only on the tip of the bell-tower.

Book Description
Framed in a lucid discussion of the intellectual issues surrounding the postmodern movement, the essays in this book re-examine the course of twentieth-century art through the work of twenty-five major sculptors. McEvilley masterfully traces the evolution of modern sculpture from the readymades of Marcel Duchamp to the anti-painting statements of the 1960s to the spiritualism and conceptualism of the 1980s and 1990s. This is a groundbreaking work in the field of art criticism and a fundamental text for anyone interested in the history of current art and culture. Allworth Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, publishes a broad range of books on the visual and performing arts, with emphasis on the business of art. Our titles cover subjects such as graphic design, theater, branding, fine art, photography, interior design, writing, acting, film, how to start careers, business and legal forms, business practices, and more. While we don't aspire to publish a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are deeply committed to quality books that help creative professionals succeed and thrive. We often publish in areas overlooked by other publishers and welcome the author whose expertise can help our audience of readers.

Book Description
"There have been other exhibitions of his works, but Robert Smithson: Photo Works is the first to examine his use of the camera and to present the way he saw the unique landscapes in which he traveled and located his art. As demonstrated by curator of photography Robert A. Sobieszek, the photographic image was central to Smithson's art, whether in collages, montages, sequences, films, or alone. Smithson's final projects attempted a collaboration art and industry. He believed artists could assist in reclaiming such devastated areas as open-face strip mines. Our expanding presence in and impact upon the land may have become so pervasive that the boundaries between nature and culture have been all but obliterated. Now two decades after his death, Robert Smithson's lessons are all the more vital and significant."-from preface.
