Book Description
If you've ever watched one of those 'prepper' reality TV shows, you might think that the people they portray are crazy - or you might secretly agree with them. Della's Diary is the story of how Della - a normal wife, mother and writer - slowly finds herself slipping into the prepper lifestyle. All she wants to do is protect the people she cares about, but instead she faces a growing rift with her husband, and surprising life changes. Excerpt Being a mom is a lot like being a prepper. It's all about being prepared for the most common crises, with enough extra supplies to help you handle pretty much anything that might come your way. Although I probably should carry some peanut-free granola bars in case I ever have to feed a kid with a peanut allergy. It's always a toss-up whether another parent is horrified when they see me feeding my son peanuts, or whether they high five me for refusing to bow down to the establishment. Maybe I need to hang around with different parents. Anyway, we're ready. Bring on the party! Bright Little Light Press says: Della's Diary humanizes the sometimes crazy-seeming extremes of the 'prepper' lifestyle. Della herself is an engaging, interesting character, and you find yourself rooting for her and even understanding her descent into prepper-dom. Readers say: "This book has a lot of layers. Introspection. Political awareness. Romance. Humor. Just when you think you've got it pinned down, it surprises you with something new." "I totally wasn't expecting the direction the book took, but Della is a relatable and compelling character." "Della is just like a friend of mine, if that friend was maybe a little too concerned about improbable things happening. I love how she feels like a real person, like someone I know."

Book Description
Piero Bigongiari (1914-1997) was among the most prolific and consistent Italian poets of the last century. He was central to the ‘third generation’ of ermetismo – the movement that voiced the mysterious, the hidden and the abstract. Bigongiari was a poet of origins, exploring the grounding of cultures in landscape and myth, the depths and limitations of home, and the symbols and narratives that sustain an individual’s bond to places. His poetic technique was based on the elaboration of motifs, tracing evolving ideas in a web of verbal themes and variations. Bigongiari’s was a voice of memory, dreams and the surprises of the psyche, speaking beyond politics or ideology to express an Italian sense of existing in modern times. Yet his work is unfamiliar to most Italians and English-language readers. This book – the first English in-depth study of the poet – addresses the roots of Bigongiari’s writing and moral ideas, which took form during the Second World War. After the fall of fascism and the destruction of much of his beloved Florence, Bigongiari abandoned the mystical style of his first collection, seeking greater emotional immediacy and a more incisive view into Italy’s mental life. His fixation on origins arose from a belief that the fascist generations had been untrue to themselves; his technique of elaboration began as an attempt to sustain fragile creativity from one poem to the next. The destructive fire of war became the crucible in which he reinvented his art. Drawing on the full range of Bigongiari’s wartime writing, from his major poetry collection Rogo [Pyre or Blaze] to essays, diaries and new archival discoveries, this book is a portrait of an author overcoming crisis and confronting the failures of his time head-on. A Voice in the Fire will appeal to fans of Italian literature and poetry, and particularly fans and students of Bigongiari’s work. It will also be enjoyed by anyone interested in WWII writing, European war poetry or European history.

Book Description
In the English language World War I has largely been analysed and understood through the lens of the Western Front. This book addresses this imbalance by examining the war in Eastern and Central Europe. The historiography of the war in the West has increasingly focused on the experience of ordinary soldiers and civilians, the relationships between them and the impact of war at the time and subsequently. This book takes up these themes and, engaging with the approaches and conclusions of historians of the Western front, examines wartime experiences and the memory of war in the East. Analysing soldiers' letters and diaries to discover the nature and impact of displacement and refugee status on memory, this volume offers a basis for comparison between experiences in these two areas. It also provides material for intra-regional comparisons that are still missing from the current research. Was the war in the East wholly 'other'? Were soldiers in this region as alienated as those in the West? Did they see themselves as citizens and was there continuity between their pre-war or civilian and military identities? And if, in the Eastern context, these identities were fundamentally challenged, was it the experience of war itself or its consequences (in the shape of imprisonment and displacement, and changing borders) that mattered most? How did soldiers and citizens in this region experience and react to the traumas and upheavals of war and with what consequences for the post-war era? In seeking to answer these questions and others, this volume significantly adds to our understanding of World War I as experienced in Central and Eastern Europe.
