Book Description
The Red Deer is one of the largest deer species and can be found across most of Europe, and in other parts of the world too. The meat of a red deer, venison, is widely used as a food source to the extent that red deer farming now exists. In Scotland, there is a healthy red deer population. Figures vary, but there are estimated to be between 500,000 - 750,000 red deer in Scotland. Although red deer traditionally lived in forests, they have adapted their habitat and behaviour in Scotland as the forests declined. They are now found mostly in glens and on mountains across the Highlands, Islands and Lowlands of Scotland. This vintage book contains accounts of the authors' experiences hunting for deer in the Scottish Highlands, making it highly recommended for those with an interest in historical Scottish hunting. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on deer hunting and stalking.

Book Description
Ian Alcock has had a lifetime's experience of the study and sporting pursuit of deer, first in southern England and later as owner successively of a deer forest in the north-west Highlands of Scotland and a farm on Royal Deeside. In this book he looks at the native deer of Britain, especially Roe Deer and Red Deer, both as fascinating creatures in their own right, and also as worthy tests of the stalker's sporting skills.

Book Description
Should there be greater access to Britain's countryside? For a thousand years British people have been battling against the 'Trespassers will be Prosecuted' mentality of landowners. Now, however, the law of trespass is under challenge. After mass trespasses and days of protest against'Forbidden Britain', we have a government committed to creating a general right of public access over at least part of rural Britain. But such a 'right to roam' will be fiercely resisted by some. What would it really mean for agriculture, forestry and wildlife, as well as recreation? Who would benefit and who would lose out? In this illuminating book Marion Shoard, dubbed the 'Rachel Carson of the British conservation movement',answers these questions and places them in what turns out to be a fascinating historical, philosophical and political context. The result provides essential reading for anyone concerned about the balance of power in a changing Britain as well as the fate of our changing countryside.

Book Description
This book gets to the heart of trophy hunting, unpacking and explaining its multiple facets and controversies, and exploring why it divides environmentalists, the hunting community, and the public. Bichel and Hart provide the first interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to the study of trophy hunting, investigating the history of trophy hunting, and delving into the background, identity and motivation of trophy hunters. They also explore the role of social media and anthropomorphism in shaping trophy hunting discourse, as well as the viability of trophy hunting as a wildlife management tool, the ideals of fair chase and sportsmanship, and what hunting trophies are, both literally and in terms of their symbolic value to hunters and non-hunters. The analyses and discussions are underpinned by a consideration of the complex moral and practical conflicts between animal rights and conservation paradigms. This book appeals to scholars in environmental philosophy, conservation and environmental studies, as well as hunters, hunting opponents, wildlife management practitioners, and policymakers, and anyone with a broad interest in human–wildlife relations.
