Book Description
This book contains the answers to the general doubts we have when we start the preparation for UPSC. From my personal experiences, I have tried to addressed some of the issues and how one can prepare. This book is divided into various chapters which have questions related to ‘before UPSC times’ i.e. when I failed in IIT even after taking a drop at Kota and my college life where I wasn’t sure as to where life will take me, ‘during UPSC times’ i.e. when I was preparing for the UPSC and ‘after UPSC’ where questions related to Mussoorie and Hyderabad academies, life of civil servants in general have been answered. I want to put a disclaimer in the beginning itself that this book doesn’t cover any part of the UPSC syllabus and this book is just to motivate and help you strategize your way to fight UPSC and any other life struggle for that matter. I would recommend readers not to ‘study’ this book but ‘read’ it which means that go through this book at leisure time. Pick up the book whenever you are in doubt, feel depressed or want to quit. This book can be your favorite companion during tough times. You will be able to learn few things from my mistakes, you might laugh at few moments, you may picture yourself as a successful candidate while reading this book. There is no compulsion to complete this book and I believe that you can pick this from any page. The size of book is because I tried addressing as much as I could in this book. Thank you. Jai Hind.

India Since Independence
Author: Bipan Chandra
Publisher: Penguin UK
ISBN: 8184750536
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 595
Book Description
A thorough and incisive introduction to contemporary India The story of the forging of India, the world's largest democracy, is a rich and inspiring one. This volume, a sequel to the best-selling India's Struggle for Independence, analyses the challenges India has faced and the successes it has achieved, in the light of its colonial legacy and century-long struggle for freedom. The book describes how the Constitution was framed, as also how the Nehruvian political and economic agenda and basics of foreign policy were evolved and developed. It dwells on the consolidation of the nation, examining contentious issues like party politics in the Centre and the states, the Punjab problem, and anti-caste politics and untouchability. This revised edition offers a scathing analysis of the growth of communalism in India and the use of state power in furthering its cause. It also documents the fall of the National Democratic Alliance in the 2004 General Elections, the United Progressive Alliance's subsequent rise to power and the Indo-US Nuclear Deal that served to unravel the political consensus at the centre. Apart from detailed analyses of Indian economic reforms since 1991 and wide-ranging land reforms and the Green Revolution, this new edition includes an overview of the Indian economy in the new millennium. These, along with objective assessments of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Jayaprakash Narayan, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rajiv Gandhi, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh, constitute a remarkable overview of a nation on the move.

Pax indica : India and the world of the 21st century
Author: Shashi Tharoor
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780143420187
Category : India
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Indian diplomacy, a veteran told Shashi Tharoor many years ago, is like the love- making of an elephant: it is conducted at a very high level, accompanied by much bellowing, and the results are not known for two years. In this lively, informative and insightful work, the award-winning author and parliamentarian brilliantly demonstrates how Indian diplomacy has become sprightlier since then and where it needs to focus in the 21st century. Explaining why foreign policy matters to an India focused on its own domestic transformation, Tharoor surveys the country's major international relationships, evokes its soft power and global responsibilities, analyses the workings of the Ministry of External Affairs and parliament and assesses the impact of public opinion on government policy. Indeed, Tharoor presents his ideas about a contemporary new grand strategy for the nation, arguing that India must move beyond non-alignment to multi-alignment. This book sets out a clear vision of an India now ready to assume global responsibility in the contemporary world. Pax Indica is another substantial achievement from one of our finest Indian authors.

Poor But Spritied In Karimnagar
Author: Sumita Dawra
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 9350295687
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 206
Book Description
The difficulty of finding solutions After six decades of policy-making and planning that appear perfect on paper, vast pockets of poverty persist across the country, accompanied by low human development indices. In Poor but Spirited in Karimnagar, Sumita Dawra recounts her experiences as collector in the district of Karimnagar in Andhra Pradesh, and grapples with the question of why even with crores of rupees of government funding, well-meaning implementing agencies and constructive action, this wide gap between intention and results continues. The stories cover diverse populations, from child labour to cotton farmers, from coal miners to malnourished power loom weavers. They traverse the thick Naxal-infested forests, course along the Godavari, and meander through the 'multiple urban worlds' of Ramagundem and the dry upland areas of Sircilla, examining the key issues that need to be addressed. Each chapter, divided into three sections - identifying the problem, providing the context, and offering the solution, along with a useful statistical guide that provides a quick overview - looks at the key points of lacunae in service delivery in the concerned areas and provides a starting point for a more effective engagement in the tackling of the problems. Based on successful models of governance within the country and elsewhere, this book from a seasoned bureaucrat offers a fresh, contemporary perspective on administration and governance.

The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in HIstorical Outline
Author: D D Kosambi
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000653471
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 251
Book Description
First published in 1965, The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in Historical Outline is a strikingly original work, the first real cultural history of India. The main features of the Indian character are traced back into remote antiquity as the natural outgrowth of historical process. Did the change from food gathering and the pastoral life to agriculture make new religions necessary? Why did the Indian cities vanish with hardly a trace and leave no memory? Who were the Aryans – if any? Why should Buddhism, Jainism, and so many other sects of the same type come into being at one time and in the same region? How could Buddhism spread over so large a part of Asia while dying out completely in the land of its origin? What caused the rise and collapse of the Magadhan empire; was the Gupta empire fundamentally different from its great predecessor, or just one more ‘oriental despotism’? These are some of the many questions handled with great insight, yet in the simplest terms, in this stimulating work. This book will be of interest to students of history, sociology, archaeology, anthropology, cultural studies, South Asian studies and ethnic studies.

Blood for Blood
Author: Terry Milewski
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 9354227791
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 250
Book Description
Fifty years ago, the campaign for a sovereign Sikh state - Khalistan - went global, proclaiming the birth of the new nation with an advertisement in The New York Times on 12 October 1971. The ensuing decades saw a bloodbath in which thousands, mainly Sikhs, lost their lives. Today, the campaign has all but fizzled out in its homeland but overseas, a politically plugged-in band of hardcore separatists keeps the cause alive. In Blood for Blood, veteran Canadian journalist Terry Milewski takes a close look at the global Khalistan project, its hunger for revenge and the feeble response of India's Western allies. He traces the rise and fall of diaspora militants like Talwinder Singh Parmar - the Vancouver-based founder of the Babbar Khalsa terrorist group and the man behind the 1985 'Kanishka' bomb plot which killed 329 aboard Air India Flight 182. The book provides startling new information about the Khalistan movement in Canada, the United Kingdom and India, which has been sustained for decades by Pakistan and now threatens to draw in China. Brilliantly researched, Blood for Blood brings new insights to a topic that continues to hold global interest decades after it first came to light.
