It is, therefore, nearly one hundred years since we have produced a national song or hymn that has taken a firm hold upon the people; and as musical composers were not numerous in this country in those earlier days, and it was the custom to set new words to tunes that the people knew, all of these old songs are sung to tunes that were not written for them. With the exception of America, however, the songs have monopolized the old tunes to which they were set, and no other important songs are now sung to them.
