Book Description
The Origins of Australia's Capital Cities is a comprehensive survey, well illustrated with maps and plans, which aims to answer two questions. First, why Australia's eight capital cities are situated where they are, and second, how they were established. Pairs of chapters on each of the State capitals - Sydney, Hobart, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane - are accompanied by studies of Canberra as the federal capital and Darwin as a territorial capital. A capital is the administrative centre of a political entity, and in Australia, unlike many overseas countries, a uniquely high proportion of the population resides in the capitals. Companion chapters examine the causes of initial European settlement in each area, and reasons for the actual establishment of each capital city. Attention is given to such topics as planning and layout, the basis of growth, potential rivals, the social nature of the cities and the nature of their spread. While there have been no other volume covering all the capitals to seek answers to the same basic questions. This will therefore be an invaluable source book, and provide a stimulus to further enquiry in the social history of Australia. An introduction by the editor pulls together the general strands which link the chapters, and highlights the ways in which the Australian experience contrasts with the urban experience overseas.

Book Description
It was the year 1773. Anne Spencer and her siblings set their foot in Boston during the latter years of American colonial era. They belong to one of the aristocratic families in England. However, after the death of their parents in a carriage accident, it was learned that their father incurred a considerable amount of debt, the payment of which left them penniless. As if the bad luck wasn’t enough, her fiancé broke their engagement, shattering Anne’s dream of having a good home with a good husband and wonderful children. They were forced to live in the slums of London and Anne and Tim hardly make ends meet. Coming to America was a way to start all over again. Anne had heard good things in the colony and was determined to give her two brothers and sister a good future. She had been raised well and was trained to manage the household and properties by her mother, qualities which she had shown in America where she immediately established a good name, being a hardworking barmaid. But that reputation will soon vanish when she refused the advances of an English officer, who in turn spread rumors that she was a woman of loose conduct. She lost her job and her dream until Theo, a man who had seen her real character, offered her marriage that would redeem her name and give her and her siblings a comfortable life. Theo had been a lonely man after the death of his wife. He was childless and was looking for an heir. The times had been frightful when the Americans demanded freedom from England. Amid those turbulent years, their love for each other strengthens, and their dream of raising children in a place where equality was of utmost importance came true.

Book Description
In 1962, the first volume of Manning Clark's "A History of Australia" appeared. For the next two-and-a-half decades Clark unfolded his tragic celebration of white Australian history. Today, the six-volume history is one of the masterpieces of Australian literature. It is also one of the most passionately debated visions of Australian history. Clark's Australians are men and women of lively goodwill and deep sinfulness, of generous idealism and unthinking brutality. He dramatizes the motivating forces of Australian life - cowardice and vision, cruelty and defiance, greatness of spirit and the spiritual vacuity of the suburbs - all of them locked in the unceasing struggle which builds a nation. Michael Cathcart has re-orchestrated Clark's epic narrative in this single volume. Every page of this abridgement rings with Manning Clark's voice. Here, at last, the general reader can encounter the deep resonances, pessimism and passion of Manning Clark - Australian historian and prophet. Michael Cathcart is co-author of "Mission to the South Seas: the Voyage of the Duff" and author of "Defending the National Tuckshop", a study of conservative responses to the Great Depression.
