Book Description
Cedar Birds is a fictional work that ordains the beliefs of the coastal Carolina Indian through their worship of the spirits, their connection with and nurturing of all that lives. These beliefs and behaviors are compared with the brutal killing of the docile right whales by the white man and his destructive, selfish domination of and exploitation of the earth in general. For example, the whale is killed for nothing more than the melting down of the huge carcass to render oil to fuel their lanterns. But darkness always returns. Cedar Birds reveals its magic through the eyes and voice of the sensitive coastal boy Davey. He also appears as a changed man who, years later, returns to his coastal home town after the horrors and his losses in Vietnam. Killing of any kindwhether of whales or of other humansmakes him ponder the mystical wisdom and spiritualistic practices of the shaman. Davey eventually comes to understand that he is of the Coree shaman bloodline; his extraordinary senses and instincts were responsible for saving him in Vietnam. The mystical connection with the spirits also delivers him from his deadly drug addiction and gives him the power to save others. Davey visits the site of the old Indian village, Cwarioc. His senses have told him that the shaman has died. He comes to open the portal through which the shamans spirit is to be delivered to the ancients where he becomes one of the faces in the windinto the mystic. But will the spirit be delivered? Have we killed it all, or can the spirits bring the healing? Has the last whale died? Is this the beginning or the ending? Will the ending become the beginning?

Book Description
Both Dylan and Cohen have been a presence on the music and poetry landscape spanning six decades. This book begins with a discussion of their contemporary importance, and how they have sustained their enduring appeal as performers and recording artists. The authors argue that both Dylan and Cohen shared early aspirations that mirrored the Beat Generation. They sought to achieve the fame of Dylan Thomas, who proved a bohemian poet could thrive outside the academy, and to live his life of unconditional social irresponsibility. While Dylan's and Cohen's fame fluctuated over the decades, it was sustained by self-consciously adopted personas used to distance themselves from their public selves. This separation of self requires an exploration of the artists' relation to religion as an avenue to find and preserve inner identity. The relationship between their lyrics and poetry is explored in the context of Federico García Lorca's concept of the poetry of inspiration and the emotional depths of 'duende.' Such ideas draw upon the dislocation of the mind and the liberation of the senses that so struck Dylan and Cohen when they first read the poetry and letters of Arthur Rimbaud and Lorca. The authors show that performance and the poetry are integral, and the 'duende,' or passion, of the delivery, is inseparable from the lyric or poetry, and common to Dylan, Cohen and the Beat Generation.

Book Description
As an astronomer, Michael Braden's job is to protect a gianttelescope from the elements at the legendary Palomar Observatory in southernCalifornia. But one night, in a midnight storm, a young woman is found on themountain, smeared with blood and wearing only a flimsy party dress. She is mute,or so it appears. Michael knows he must shield her too. And as Elena's storybegins to reveal itself, stretching tautly from Havana to Mexico and back toPalomar, Michael becomes engulfed in a firestorm both psychological andphysical, where the past relentlessly pursues the present in a dark race forlove, redemption and a new life. Set both on the border between California and Mexico--wherewaves of immigrants and criminals overwhelm the mountain with kidnapping, secretidentities and murder--and in the small Canadian town of Penetanguishene, TheTruth About the Night beautifully reflects another kind of violence, where entire galaxies must be destroyed to create new life and order. A stunningblend of superb storytelling and cinematic dialogue with a powerful explorationof the fragile truths that connect us all, Martyn Burke delivers a novel that isas provocative as it is entertaining.
