Book Description
Kelly was rich, beautiful, spoiled and born bossy. For Christopher, she'd decided that absolute submission to her will was the destiny he secretly craved. In any case, it was the destiny he was going to get. From the moment Chris sees Kelly across the dance floor, he is as helpless as a marionette in her hands...At a distance, she was impressive; close-up she was lethal. She reminded Chris of Tinker Bell all grown up, with her pixie-cut, white-blonde hair and a tight-cinched lime sweater dress that emphasized reckless curves above and below..."I'm looking for a guy who will follow my lead--not only on the dance floor, but in all things. How do you feel about that?"Little does Chris dream what lies in store for him when Kelly makes him her dancing partner -- that this is only the first baby step in what will be a prolonged descent into complete and utter submission.

Book Description
After ten years of selecting great books from writers, new and established, Prairie Schooner celebrates the first decade of its Book Prize series by offering this collection of excerpts from each year's winners in fiction and poetry. Writers such as Brock Clarke, Anne Finger, Rynn Williams, and Paul Guest open windows to ordinary and fantastic experience showcasing the liveliness and power of contemporary literature. Greg Hrbek's darkly comic, genre-bending tales stand alongside Ted Gilley's stories about achieving bliss through pain and John Keeble's reflections on community and the difficulty of love. Here Shane Book's poems serve as an elegiac witness to suffering, while Kathleen Flenniken's poems consider ordinary women constructing their own significance, and Kara Candito's explore sex, loss, and human passions. Whether the topic is fantastic or quotidian, childbirth or monsters, South American airplane disaster or suburban Wisconsin, this writing carries us to the furthest reaches of human experience.

Book Description
Traditionally, the Cherokees dance to ensure individual health and social welfare. According to legend, the dance songs bequeathed to them by the Stone Coat monster will assuage all the ills of life that the monster brought. Winter dance (including the Booger Dance, which expresses the Cherokees’ anxiety at the white invasion) are to be given only during times of frost, lest they affect the growth of vegetation by attracting cold and death. The summer dance (the Green Corn Ceremony and the Ballplayer’s Dance) are associated with crops and vegetation. Other dances are purely for social intercourse and entertainment or are prompted by specific events in the community. When it was first published in 1951, this description of the dances of a conservative Eastern Cherokee band was hailed as a scholarly contribution that could not be duplicated, Frank G. Speak and Leonard Broom had achieved the close and sustained interaction that very best ethnological fieldwork requires. Their principal informant, will West Long, upheld the unbroken ceremonial tradition of the Big Cove band, near Cherokee, North Carolina.
