Book Description
Many children experience great trauma while growing up. In so doing, the traumatic experience becomes repressed, perhaps in an effort to cover up the pain that is suffered. One of the traumas that unfortunately exist is child sexual abuse. A child is suddenly ripped of his self-esteem and feeling of well-being. During my experience as a dance/movement therapist, it has been revealed through movement, that more than half my clients were victims of child sexual abuse. Since the sexual abuse took place on a bodily level, it was therefore contacted and acknowledged on the same level-through movement, even when the client was unable to verbalize or even recall the experience. The purpose of this study is to discover the impact that movement, more specifically, Dance/Movement Therapy has on the adolescent and how it helps him/her to regain the self-esteem that was lost as a result of being a victim of child sexual abuse.

Book Description
This book offers a timely, detailed, and comprehensive synopsis of dance/movement therapy (DMT) in the treatment of psychological trauma. Along with the foundational concepts of DMT, tied to traditional trauma theory and a neurobiological framework, contributions contain rich clinical examples that illustrate the use of dance, creative movement, and body awareness with a wide variety of populations including survivors of sex trafficking, military veterans, refugees, those with multigenerational trauma, and others. Chapters emphasize the underlying influences of power, privilege, and oppression on trauma, prompting practitioners to consider and understand the dynamics of sociocultural contexts and engage in continuous self-reflection. Featuring multiple perspectives, as well as cultural and contextual considerations, this book provides direct takeaways for clinicians and professionals and concludes with a roadmap for the trajectory of trauma-informed, healing-centered DMT.

Book Description
The purpose of this culminating project was to develop a framework through a support group for female and female-identifying victims of sexual assault and violence across university settings using a DMT inspired framework. Four modules to highlight the combination of trauma- informed movement and psychoeducation to further address, acknowledge and offer support for female and female-identifying victims. The themes explore awareness and prevention, trauma and the brain, trauma and the body, and dance/movement therapy frameworks to further investigate how sexual trauma is processed. Although support groups are available for student in most counseling centers within universities, this approach is different, offering a support group that uses movement as the modality for processing and exploring. The literature review includes research addressing somatic based theories and frameworks to sexual trauma, psychological influences, how DMT relates to sexual trauma, preventions and approaches within higher education, and established frameworks for trauma treatment. The trauma-informed movement and psychoeducation modules are intended to bring awareness to the depths sexual trauma can have on victims, and acknowledge the benefit of using movement as a healing tool and approach during the recovery process.
