Rarely do Indian environmental discourses examine nature through the lens of caste. Whereas nature is considered as universal and inherent, caste is understood as a constructed historical and social entity. Mukul Sharma shows how caste and nature are intimately connected. He compares Dalit meanings of environment to ideas and practices of neo-Brahmanism and certain mainstreams of environmental thought. Showing how Dalit experiences of environment are ridden with metaphors of pollution, impurity, and dirt, the author is able to bring forth new dimensions on both environment and Dalits, without valourizing the latter’s standpoint. Rather than looking for a coherent understanding of their ecology, the book explores the diverse and rich intellectual resources of Dalits, such as movements, songs, myths, memories, and metaphors around nature. These reveal their quest to define themselves in caste-ridden nature and building a form of environmentalism free from the burdens of caste. The Dalits also pose a critical challenge to Indian environmentalism, which has, until now, marginalized such linkages between caste and nature.

The contributors to this major intervention into Indian historiography trace the strategies through which Dalits have been marginalized as well as the ways Dalit intellectuals and leaders have shaped emancipatory politics in modern India. Moving beyond the anticolonialism/nationalism binary that dominates the study of India, the contributors assess the benefits of colonial modernity and place humiliation, dignity, and spatial exclusion at the center of Indian historiography. Several essays discuss the ways Dalits used the colonial courts and legislature to gain minority rights in the early twentieth century, while others highlight Dalit activism in social and religious spheres. Modernization in India was initiated by Britain's East India Company through its educational policy. When the British left India, there were three modernist education projects in operation. A man by the name of Baba Saheb Ambedkar also developed his own vision of an education movement for the people of India. Ambedkar asserted that British education did not help Dalits, a marginalized group in Indian society. Modernization and Dalit Education is devoted to the major contributions of Ambedkar in education, the theory of Dalit development, and the need for industrialization. The natural corollary of modernization in India includes, according to Ambedkar, the translation of democratic values not only in social life but in economic life too, through the promotion of the public sector. The book also examines Ambedkar's ideas about the contemporary educational problems of Dalits, such as the equality of opportunity in education, the empowerment of Dalits through education, and the marginalization of Dalits in emerging areas of study in higher education. It concludes with a retort that development in general, and the emancipation of Dalits in particular, is possible only through parliamentary democracy.
