A theoretical treatment of the sound field produced upon the interaction of a vortex and a normal shock wave was presented some time ago in UTIA Report No. 61 (H.S. Ribner, 1959). The techniques of this analysis are used to derive expressions for the shape of the distorted shock front. It is found that outside of the section cut off by the cylindrical acoustic wave emanating from the vortex center, the shock remains essentially straight. The portion within this section has curvature, resulting in a finite displacement of the two straight segments. These theoretical predictions are in qualitative agreement with the features noted by experimental investigators of the same phenomenon. As no other presently published theory yields the shock wave shape, this work demonstrates the generality of the approach used. (Author).

The state of the art in a theory of oscillatory and wave phenomena in hydrodynamical flows is presented in this book. A unified approach is used for waves of different physical origins. A characteristic feature of this approach is that hydrodynamical phenomena are considered in terms of physics; that is, the complement of the conventionally employed formal mathematical approach. Some physical concepts such as wave energy and momentum in a moving fluid are analysed, taking into account induced mean flow. The physical mechanisms responsible for hydrodynamic instability of shear flows are considered within the concept of negative energy waves. The phenomenon of over-reflection is analysed. A number of well-known theorems of the hydrodynamic theory of stability are interpreted in terms of the interaction of the waves having different energy signs. Attention is drawn to the plasma-hydrodynamic analogy, which is a powerful tool for physical analyses of general mechanisms of wave amplification and absorption in flows. Various wave-flow interaction problems are considered, for instance, sound generation in whistlers, wave scattering and amplification by vortices, methods of wave remote sounding, and some nonlinear dynamical and chaotic phenomena.The book is intended for researchers specializing in wave theory, aeroacoustics, geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamics, and related fields. It may also be useful to graduate and post-graduate students as a supplement to standard lecture courses.

This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Eighth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows held at the Technical University of Munich, 9-11 September 1991. The first of these biennial international symposia was held at the Pennsylvania State Uni versity, USA, in 1977; subsequent symposia have been held at Imperial College, London, England; the University of California, Davis, USA; the University of Karlsruhe, Ger many; Cornell University, Ithaca, USA; the Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France; and Stanford University, California, USA. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of new developments in the field of turbulence, especially as related to shear flows of importance in engineering and geo physics. From the 330 extended abstracts submitted for this symposium, 145 papers were presented orally and 60 as posters. Out of these, we have selected twenty-four papers for inclusion in this volume, each of which has been revised and extended in accordance with the editors' recommendations.
